Forget co-op. 2 reasons :
-The peer to peer solution is very unstable and you will have a hard time seeing other players in game, let alone see what they see (constant sync issues with npcs)
-There are about 3 different combat encounters in the game, and they are completely trivial to complete on your own. There is no reason to team up against anything in NMS
MP can be benefitial for exploring and hunting RNG item spawns, but the effective way of doing that would be to just split up to be twice as fast, and then share your discoveries.
You can help someone building a base, but you cannot share ownership, and you won't be able to edit their base while they're not online. Also, you will experience sync issues (base not updating/rendering in time).
In general, MP in NMS is barely functional and its main purpose is to share what you've build and/or found while playing alone.
Nothing is shared and the experience has been repeatedly described as playing by yourself with friends.
If you can warp as a group in a player's freighter (passengers must be on the freighter deck), sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
In other situations, he's found Curious Deposits (runaway mold), then I join his game to reap the nanites.
We've also done some ground based combat together as well as derelict freighters, i.e., combat that requires players using multi-tool weapons, as opposed to ship weapons.
It's good enough, considering that you can easily reach game caps solo (units, ships, multi-tools, inventory, etc.)
