Forget co-op. 2 reasons :

-The peer to peer solution is very unstable and you will have a hard time seeing other players in game, let alone see what they see (constant sync issues with npcs)

-There are about 3 different combat encounters in the game, and they are completely trivial to complete on your own. There is no reason to team up against anything in NMS

MP can be benefitial for exploring and hunting RNG item spawns, but the effective way of doing that would be to just split up to be twice as fast, and then share your discoveries.

You can help someone building a base, but you cannot share ownership, and you won't be able to edit their base while they're not online. Also, you will experience sync issues (base not updating/rendering in time).

In general, MP in NMS is barely functional and its main purpose is to share what you've build and/or found while playing alone.

Do your friends already play it?

Basic...very very basic. There is really no advantage to playing with friend as far as the game is concerned. If you like the social aspect and talking- it would be ok.

Nothing is shared and the experience has been repeatedly described as playing by yourself with friends.

I admit that the multiplayer is not perfect and is quite limited. But, despite everything, I play almost every day with one or more friends. As for the combat in space, it is not always possible to cooperate: the player who is attacked by pirates, for example, must defeat them alone. Most of the time, the other players do not even see the enemies. I have done several Nexus missions to eliminate pirates in a group. They went quite normally. I did not encounter any problems either in the ground sentry fights in a group. On the other hand, the number of sentries to eliminate is greater in this case. As for the construction of bases, if they can be built together, the base belongs only to the player who placed the base computer and the player(s) in the group can only add or remove elements with the authorization of the owner of the base and only in his presence. Sometimes, too, it happens that you don't see all the elements of the base built by a player in the group if you didn't witness its construction.
If you can warp as a group in a player's freighter (passengers must be on the freighter deck), sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

I've never had a real issue playing wtih friends; base building and base "draw in" is a little sketchy, but I dunno. Always worked for me, except for some of the Nexus Missions (rescue someone); always seemed a little borked.

My husband and I both play NMS, but we rarely play together However, during the current Expedition, we did use it once, when I found something needed for a Milestone that took some searching to find. He then joined my game and was able to get it too.

In other situations, he's found Curious Deposits (runaway mold), then I join his game to reap the nanites.

We've also done some ground based combat together as well as derelict freighters, i.e., combat that requires players using multi-tool weapons, as opposed to ship weapons.

It's good enough, considering that you can easily reach game caps solo (units, ships, multi-tools, inventory, etc.)
