I repaired the multi tool and found the ship.
Then after I got to the ship, I left it to find repair materials and more sodium for the cold. The HUD marker then disappeared. I then wandered around A LOT and eventually after about half an hour got a prompt to install a visor scanner thingy, which allowed me to find the ship again. It's the huge delay of getting that second prompt that was the problem.
So far I think the tutorial is pretty bad, frankly. But at least that problem is solved.
Not to mention, you had to do 'something' extra for it to need repairs again. The visor being re-damaged is not part of the tutorial.
You are misunderstanding what happened. There was a mission right away to repair the scanner, and later,. a mission to install the visor. The problem was a huge delay in between where the ship did not show up anywhere and there was no prompt as to what to do next. I wandered around with the hull plates to repair the ship for ages before I got the visor prompt.
For example, in Empyrion there is a button to change hud settings, and when accidentally pressed, i find myself suddenly not being able to find things without understanding why?
Also there is a button to deactivate shields, and after getting blown up a few times because of that, i went into the key bindings and removed both of these useless key bindings, problem solved.
I am unaware if NMS has a key binding for changing hud settings, but if it does, its not in a position i am likely to accidentally press it seems?
Edit: One other thing with NMS, you do have to do a bit of hand holding with regard to the active mission, since it has a habit of switching the active mission, so you need to often press escape and check the log and see what is the active mission?
One thing to watch out for with NMS is making sure the current mission stays "active" in your mission log, as you won't necessarily get the needed prompts if it isn't active.
Also, any time you're stuck, open up the actual mission log and read the details there. That information should always be current, even if you are not getting any prompts in the HUD.
Given how far you are (not very), it might be best to cancel out of this save and do over. Pay attention to your relative direction of travel away from the ship, and maybe even take a couple of hard looks back so you kind of get the feel. You should have a compass so you can peg the general direction of travel.
If I remember right, once you get to a certain distance headed back to the ship, the icon pops again.
The way the tutorial is written is maddening. Everything is in this nonlinear order where it asks you to achieve the result and then eventually tells you how to achieve it. The UI is bad,
And it's endless "There's a hole in the bucket dear liza" stringing you along, when all I want to do is jump in a crappy little basic ship and explore. If I wanted hours of digging rocks I could play any number of regular survival games. I would suspect there's a fun game to get to eventually but the tutorial is really terrible, and I've played a ton of survival games. I know people like this game but, it's just not for me.
The game is famous for automatically switching your Objectives in the Log, so that you suddenly have a different objective.
You should've checked the log to make sure the "Find your ship" objective was still selected, otherwise if it switches the objective, the ship icon/waypoint will disappear until you select the mission again.
I had it do that to me while I was looking for a specific item for a mission, then it switched the objective, and the waypoint/marker I was following was suddenly gone, and I had thought I had missed the waypoint, so I kept flying around in my ship trying to pick the way point up again, until I checked the log and found out the game had auto switched it on me.
People have been complaining about that since 2016.
When I went back to it ~1 year later, everything flowed better for me and now I have over 3,000 hours of play.
My point is that (imo) you aren't wrong about the start and how it feels to a brand new player who has any experience with other games. But yah, it gets better. Assuming you like sandboxes.
I also got tricked by the game when I just started exploring and playing it my way when what I should've done is going for the main quest immediate and doing all other quest things.
The game is not for everyone. Since they made their own engine and its a small developer, its not cookie cutter the same as every other game out there. There is a mode where you can skip the starting quests and just jump in your ship and explore. I believe its called creative mode. the difficulty settings can be changed at any time. the ui does take getting used to, but there are plenty of people here in the forums to help answer questions. After one of the updates, they completely changed the tech modules and how to play - I gave up for a few years myself. after a lot more changes i found it fun to come back to. maybe you will try again in the future, maybe not. once you finish the maddening quests to get a ship and jump to the next system you will have everything you need to progress. everything after that is optional and will take some time to learn but is not necessary if you just want to system hop and explore.
