expedition playing keepaway with airless planet
Hi, Phase 3 'grand tour'

Got the first two within five minutes, but after warping to 20 different random systems i have realized random searching is NOT going to work.... i am going to get to the end of this expedition and have to say this was the hardest part, how stupid.

So, i give up, where can i find one?

I had to visit 17 systems before I found one.

Only two suggestions: First, keep in mind that it doesn't have to be named as an "Airless planet", any dead biome planet will work for the photograph milestone.

Beyond that, several people have built bases to make it easier to find one, so if you haven't already check the "Other bases" at teleporters to see if you can find one with "Airless" in the base name.

If all else fails, check this thread which has directions to a planet that will work.

Dead biome planets make up about 1 in 20 planets in yellow star systems in Euclid and are a bit more rare than that in red, green and blue systems. So it can take a while to find one. Hopefully the "other bases" and/or directions in that thread help you get 'er done.

Yeah, i know from experience the planet descriptions are often vague, so, i got about 10 useless snapshots already from planets that did not mention a plant in its resources.

I will give the base list a try.... nice idea!

Yah, unfortunately several other biomes also have "no plants" listed as a resource. Those "other biomes" include volcanic, exotic, and (sometimes) marshy planets. Exotic planets alone are more common than dead ones (crazy as that sounds), so just having no plant resource is not a reliable indicator in and of itself.

Update, nothing about airless planet in the bases list, looks like i'm out of luck.

I figured it might be hard to find. Despite the great intentions of the people who built them, generally you only see "other bases" in the list if the bases are either in systems you have recently visited or the player who built them is in the same instance with you. i.e. they aren't particularly helpful to get to systems you haven't y ourself visited yet.

The anomaly would be the best place to check the other bases, given that you'd be in the same instance as far more other players.

Yeah, the anomaly is where i tried it.

I'm just going to skip ahead and do other missions in phase 4, since i have done everything i can do in phase 3 now. Then just check the base list every day until i run out of other things to do. If none of that works, at the end, i will fluff my chair pillows and settle in for the great F-wit galaxy goose chase airless planet hunt.

I published my Airless Planet base last night... "Animal Mother's Airless Planet Base." I saw other airless planet bases in the list at the time. I think it only shows bases in the list of players that are online and actively playing.

No, you can see bases for players that are not online, but only if you are either in the system, or have very recently been in the system.

I think Rendezvous 2 was a portal, so there's your way to an airless planet.

EDIT: I see that this may not be useful as to activate the portal, you need all the glyphs.

Not really, considering the expedition never gives you the glyphs. Getting all the glyphs via gravesites/travelers is likely to be just as time-consuming as straight up exploration, if not moreso.

I don't know how I came upon that system... All I remember is that I found it after only two jumps looking for an airless planet. I just now tried to search for it from Rendezvous 1 and 2, but no dice... I probably wasn't at either 1 or 2 immediately prior. There was an Atlas jump and a black hole jump, so I could have been at one of those systems just prior. Oh well.

If you can't find an airless planet, I just built a base on the one I did the mission on. If you want, I could take you there. It's in a system that also has an Atlas station. You can join my game when I'm in-game or send me a contact request.

One shortcut I found to the Airless planet: if you ask Polo for Atlas Station coordinates in the starting system, the system he sends you to has an airless planet. If the HG person testing the expedition did that, they may not have even thought of it as an issue. I'll load up my save & see what the system name is.

Edit: The system name is Rigusaka, the planet is Beverhampt Maeza. The specific biome is "Terraforming Catastrophe". It is an easy jump from the starting system - at most you would need a single C-Class hyperdrive upgrade in the starting ship.

So to summarize, if you are having trouble finding an airless planet:
- clear any Atlas Station you currently have on your galaxy map
- return to the expedition starting system through the space station teleport (you probably have a base there, since you needed to construct a base to get the hyperdrive plans)
- summon the anomaly & ask Polo for Atlas Station coordinates
- Jump to Rigusaka, land on the right planet, take a picture

IIRC airless/lifeless planets all have "Rusted Metal" listed in the resources list as well as also having no plants listed there. Apparently, this reddit post is helping people find a qualifying planet. Edit: Remember to check 2nd picture in OP for Galaxy map image.

I didn't go so far as to say "all" dead biome planets have rusted metal simply because I have not paid enough attention to be sure that is correct.

I do know that rusted metal only appears on dead biome planets though, so you are absolutely right that, if you see rusted metal as a listed resource, it is going to work for the milestone.
