A rogue black hole[nomanssky.fandom.com] is one of the many possible random pulse encounters[nomanssky.fandom.com], so technically, yes, they can just randomly occur in any system.

Yep, just had one appear in front of me while jumping.
Fortunately, I was quick enough to avoid it. (I was doing one of the living ship missions at the time)

Yes some do occur randomly but they do not stick around. Not sure if it still the case, but the "regular" black holes stay put in a system and go to a specific location each and every time. There was a website called Blackhole Suns that had a mapping campaign and you could use them to shorten your journey to the center or some other locatrion in a galaxy.

That element kind of dried up when they allowed your ship to join you when you used a portal and players figured out just putting the first glyph (Sunset) would get you within 5,000 lys of the center.

The only unfortunate thing about all the updates and improvements, is some of the original game challenges are gone for good. It used to be a badge of honor to transfer between galaxies because it was difficult and time consuming even when you used tricks like the black holes. (and you could never return to the former galaxy- realistically)

Now transferring galaxies feels like taking a bus ride downtown. You can easily do it in a few hours. You can teleport between galaxies after you have established a station or base in each.

I had one appear at one of the galaxy center systems.

This sounds like a song!

'Do black holes
suddenly appear
when ever
you are near
maybe like me
they just want to be
close to you'

I haven't seen a pulse encountered rogue black hole in ages. Good to know they are still in the game.
