How Has No Man's Sky Sold So Far
Hi everyone,

I don't understand how No Man's Sky can release so many updates without charging for them. It's really impressive! Because of this, I think the game must have sold very well. Does anyone know how many copies the game has sold since its release?

Reports state as of 2022 they've sold over 10+ million copies.

Also as of the new update, they just cracked the Top 10 again on steam sales (not sure how much that represents in sales but assuming, a lot)

10 million doesn't sound like much after 8 years? i would guess they have more also because they are working on a new game which looks like a big game too

But they only have a small team - less than 3 dozen. They've sold enough copies that they can make payroll just on the /interest/. And that means they can develop NMS for as long as they please even if they never sell another copy.

Massive revenue from release is easy to sustain when they are indie devs and don't make giant expensive projects that appeal to investors. People are still buying the game too and massive updates and ports to other platforms keep it in the news, so it is perpetually advertised.

Other space games shooting themselves in the foot also helps. NMS has continued to exist in its own corner, growing more and more powerful with each year. Then when games like Starfield perhaps don't turn out like some people wanted they have this game to flock to which already existed the whole time.

They are privately owned, and also a very small team. They don't need much money.
