(And I don't think they wanted me there, they kept killing me, lol).
Add in going on Expeditions or shared missions from the Anomaly, or just going to a teleporter and picking to warp to one of the dozens of random bases others have uploaded, I'd say every player that hasn't turned off MP is likely to meet others occasionally.
On the other hand, I'd say it's definitely NOT like an MMO.
The game map is absurdly large, each galaxy has about 10x as systems as the Milkway galaxy. Encountering another player in the wild is technically possible, but unless you are in a populated area the odds of that happening are effectively zero.
If you want to interact with other players you need to;
1. Go to the Space Anomaly (multi player hub)
2. Go to one of the player created community planets
3. Then available join a Expedition (time limited community event)
This game is not a MMO in the same sense as World of Warcraft or EVE Online. There is a match making server that will create instances of up to 32 players if you have multi player enabled, but the networking is mainly peer to peer and the sync is terrible (two players standing next to each other can see different weather and flora and fauna in different locations).
The anomaly and expeditions just force ppl into one place. Out in the wild, with networking turned on, you can randomly encounter other players. This, however, will be rare.
Peak gaming right there.
I just got my ship up and running but needed a break cuz of the intense heat in the UK rn. Looking forward to sinking my teeth into the game later on.
So yeap, it is definitely possible.
However PermaDeath mode has separated pool of players from normal / survival mode.
The Anomaly acts as a hub so there's always online players inside it, but not much to do.
