Now select Installed Files and then click on Verify Integrity of Game Files.
Wait for that to finish and see if it helps.
And next I would start by updating the GPU drivers ...Check your Device Manager under Display Adapter wwhich GPU you have and update them from the corresponding website :
AMD: https://www.amd.com/en/support
Intel: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download-center/home.html
Nvidia: https://www.nvidia.com/en-gb/geforce/drivers/
I'm curious, did you have to configure down > less detail > lower refresh
Or higher? Full screen, windowed, or borderless?
What are your specs for OP's comparison?
i run natively in 1080p (monitor is not 4K).
the game was freshly installed in the past week but not launched until after the driver update.
verified the game twice, and it still does not launch. what could cause a game to not fully open when you're up to date even?
Do you have an Antivir App installed ?
You may try a clean boot , to figure out if there is an APP in the back the reason :

Disable all but Steam
Check Windows Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application and System logs. See if NMS.exe has appeared in there.
Edit: Also check if a log has been created at \\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\No Man's Sky\GAMEDATA\FullLlog.txt
Then check if \\Users\[Windowsusername]\AppData\Roaming\HelloGames\NMS\st_76561198052884199\cache has any files in it.
Try with Steam Cloud saves disabled in case it is an issue getting old saves.
no hardware changes at all. disabled saves. still no boot. also can't find NMS in the event viewer when it does its thing.
\Steam\steamapps\common\No Man's Sky\Binaries
And maybe that has been written :
TKGRAPHICSSETTINGS.MXML (just open it with notepad and copy&paste the content here)
That file is in \steamapps\common\No Man's Sky\Binaries\Settings
