Why won't the game launch?
I haven't played in ages, so after some time now, friends do want to play this game and have asked me to join them.

The problem I'm having is, I click play and it asks for standard or VR play. I select standard because no VR. it appears like it's cycling through data to launch the game completely, but then it doesn't. it goes from stop to play again, so i click play to launch and do it again, and it never goes full screen or tells me why the game seems to boot crash or not even load at all.

Is there something I'm missing based on this update? The last time I played it within the past year and a half roughly, no issues launching the game at all.

If on Steam, go to your Library, right click on the game, and select Properties.
Now select Installed Files and then click on Verify Integrity of Game Files.
Wait for that to finish and see if it helps.

And next I would start by updating the GPU drivers ...Check your Device Manager under Display Adapter wwhich GPU you have and update them from the corresponding website :
AMD: https://www.amd.com/en/support
Intel: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download-center/home.html
Nvidia: https://www.nvidia.com/en-gb/geforce/drivers/

I had similar problem after an update, after checking Steam setting were right I had to fiddle with my computer adjusting quality and refresh rate. found it odd too that there was no crash or error report

I'm curious, did you have to configure down > less detail > lower refresh
Or higher? Full screen, windowed, or borderless?
What are your specs for OP's comparison?

so i should say prior to posting, i updated my drivers (RTX 2060S).
i run natively in 1080p (monitor is not 4K).
the game was freshly installed in the past week but not launched until after the driver update.

verified the game twice, and it still does not launch. what could cause a game to not fully open when you're up to date even?

Without an error code its not so easy ..
Do you have an Antivir App installed ?
You may try a clean boot , to figure out if there is an APP in the back the reason :

Disable all but Steam

I assume the last time you played was on the same computer and it has had no hardware changes since then?

Check Windows Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application and System logs. See if NMS.exe has appeared in there.

Edit: Also check if a log has been created at \\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\No Man's Sky\GAMEDATA\FullLlog.txt
Then check if \\Users\[Windowsusername]\AppData\Roaming\HelloGames\NMS\st_76561198052884199\cache has any files in it.

Try with Steam Cloud saves disabled in case it is an issue getting old saves.

checked the log file, it's just 4 lines, says nothing significant. checked the other folder for files. a few JSON and whatnot.

no hardware changes at all. disabled saves. still no boot. also can't find NMS in the event viewer when it does its thing.

What if you run NMS.exe as Admin ?
\Steam\steamapps\common\No Man's Sky\Binaries

And maybe that has been written :
TKGRAPHICSSETTINGS.MXML (just open it with notepad and copy&paste the content here)
That file is in \steamapps\common\No Man's Sky\Binaries\Settings
