Something new? Base Computer in the Wild found using map
Never expected this outcome. I was on the ocean portion of a planet and wanted to find some dry land to pick up the last few fauna. I was hoping for a minor settlement, but instead I got the icon for a Base Shelter.

When I arrived it was a base computer in the wild. Never use maps so maybe that has been in the game awhile. Kind of nice having a way to ping those. I like the locations because they are flattened and ideal if you like the idea of finding the location again on another save.

I didn't know you could find a Shelter with a map either. But, very rarely, I've found a wild base computer identified as "Shelter" by using the Signal Booster. : )

Which map did you pop? That's unique and worth spending nav's on..

Wow, I never realised that was possible...
just checked the wiki, apparently it's been a thing since Outlaws update.

An unclaimed base computer may be found by luckily coming across it while traversing the planet surface on foot, by starship in low flight, or in exocraft. The probability of coming across one this way is quite low, but not zero.

A slightly better way is to use Planetary Chart (inhabited outpost) to locate an inhabited structure. It may require many attempts as these charts will locate a variety of structures such as Observatory, Shelters and Minor Settlements, but there is a small chance to find an unclaimed base computer.

Such "POI" used to be a thing. I even think you could find them using a tower or something. (I keep forgetting the vocabulary.) (Waaay before "Outlaw" IIRC.)

I think they are very rare.

Mr. Bufferlow, can you explain to me what you did? Did you simply press "C" for scanning while flying?

I would very much like to find such POI myself for base building. :(

Not sure if my reply is visible due to the link...
According to wiki:
It was added in Outlaws, very rare chance. Can be found with Planetary Chart (inhabited outpost)

The wiki is known to be inaccurate thought.

I'll check with older versions... someday... :P

I'm pretty sure they were easier to find in 1.13 and 1.24.

I used an Inhabited Outpost Map. In pinged a base shelter initially. As I got closer that changed to what you see in the first photo.

Here is a screenshot showing the map description.

I've found random base computers in the wild, but I've never noticed one marked like that. I just thought they were old bases left over from major overhaul-type updates from a save that a player didn't delete.

Not new.

Wild Base Computers have existed since NEXT and Wild Bases (since there were no base computers) existed since Foundation

I was aware that wild base computers existed, but I wasn't aware that they could be found using planetary charts.

The best thing about finding one of these is the fact the ground around it is perfectly flat. This game really needs more flatlands, its WAY to damn hilly to a artifical degree. Anytime I build an actual base I usually have to use Walls to basicaly elevate it 1-2 walls off the ground due to how uneven it is. You might say well terraform the ground but this does not work, why? after x amout of terrian edits globally it starts resetting the older ones eventually as it only has a limited space it will use to store these. I think this includes everything from using the terrain manipulator to even mining with the mining beam, eventually the stuff you mine will respawn.

Definitely a relic of code dating back to the first update. Things have come a long way! :nmsatlas:

I have a base that was a wild base before I claimed it. It's my factory now-- many greenhouses in double levels, growing plants that I turn into high-value items to sell or give away (mostly give away-- I have enough wealth now).
