Who has a "Shiny Metal Plates" just randomly? Are you saying I can just donate any rare treasure, and it doesn't have to be that specific one?
Also guilds are not random on space stations. I presume in your region you can find only Explorers guild.

I've definitely had random treasures in my inventory that will appear at the bottom of the list even when not displayed otherwise...
Not sure if I've ever had the specific rare item listed though...
But either way, you can get the discount up to the max of 50% just by donating the common items...
Unless this was fixed in a recent patch, if you have a decent discount, you can also buy all the tech from the traders and sell it straight back to them for a profit. Earns about 5-10k nanites a station with a 50% discount (depending on the quality of the random tech they have for sale)
BUT, as pointed out above - there's NO reason to bother with rares ever, I was able to max out Explorers within 20 minutes using storm crystals, glowing minerals and exosuit maps, latter you can buy sometimes at trading outposts en masse + every time you reload / port back and forth between stations - list resets = you can donate again.
The most valuable rewards from all guilds are augmentations: as soon as guilds are maxed and rewards are marked in spreadsheet - it's a question of porting around grabbing stuff. May be not as exciting as trashing derelicts, but time wise and reliability wise - this IS THE most efficient and fastest way to expand your inventories and stuff up freighter. Cheers!
You can donate anything you have on hand.

But hey, such idea is unpopular here. 'This game is not about this... this game is not about that...'
GenSec39 -- what a great idea. Being able to display the ancient bones just as they looked when you found them, but on a pedestal in your base -- would be awesome.
The other treasures would need to have 3D models and textures made for them, and that would also be awesome.
Fury Fairy, I agree. I usually just donate the top item. stacks of 3, to the guilds and whatever else I have on me that they're looking for. It's almost too easy, IMO, and makes doing quests almost pointless, especially given that even high-level quests only award 1 point toward rank. I believe a rebalance wouldn't be a bad thing.
Also, GenSec: In the number of years since they added the Artifact Vault, I still haven't figured out what the hell it is the dang thing wants. I even bought a map at the Archive called "ARTIFACT MAP", went and dug up an "ARTIFACT" and nope. Everything was greyed out. I've brought things to it before that it took, but 9 times out of ten it won't take any of the obvious artifacts and speciments and dino bones and salvaged rarities I've got on me.
Screw it. I don't care because I can fill up my inventory with bones -- leaving the blue ones in the ground, taking the purple and gold, and make serious bank -- without needing to play that inscrutible guessing game, always ending with my toon virtually screaming "What do you want from me!!!???"
Thanks! Wasn't sure if my memory was playing tricks on me :)
If you have an item of a type not listed on the local Vaults, you can take it to a PArc in another system to see if the selection of type options there is a better match.
The ranking of rarities is:
Blue background - sorta rare, probably 100,000+ unit range.
Purple background - rarer, probably 400,000 - 600,000 unit range.
Gold background - REALLY old and rare - 1.5M to 2.5M+ unit range.
The Vaults will usually exchange blue for purple, purple for gold, but there is a chance it will only exchange for same background. With the same background items, the actual value rolled is RNG.
You may exchange items in different Vaults of the same PArc, in a string fashion, trying to progress to the big bucks for gold background stuff. But remember, it does not always go up in type, and within a small range, value can actually go down a bit on a bad same color exchange. When the Vault text says "equal or greater value", what it actually means is *equal or greater rarity class/background color.
Remember that each Vault can only be used ONCE! The double Vault on the main floor of the PArc counts as ONE Vault. There are 3 Vaults at each PArc, one main floor, one each in the bottom of a couple of the massive support pillars. They DO reset, but it takes a VERY long time.
There are some rare items, most famously most if not all of the creations of the Farmer, that do not match any of the 6 Vault rare item categories. Also, I don't think any Vaults will take the commonest bones, from Ancient Bones planets - they MAY take some of the more valuable ones - I don't recall for sure. Again, check the item type as listed on the item pop-up card; the type name must match the Vaults acceptance list exactly.
Hope this helps you. Took me a bunch of searches, reading, and a LOT of Vault trial and error to figure it out.
If you get into Artifact trading big time, I recommend that you drop a BC at every PArc you find, and code into the label (use your own short-hand code) the 3 item types accepted, and the number of unused Vaults at that site. Update as you use them. So you are not flying items over to Vaults that are all full up.
