You could get the some S class hazard protection modules though... you can have up to 3 for each hazard type... this should extend the time between recharges a decent bit... (they do clutter up the quick recharge menu though, so best to only have them installed if you need them at the time)
I got no problems with using a mod to do it if needed, as its a nice QoL feature I'd like the base game to have.
I could see it working well as a (expensive) tech module, so early game still requires more hands on management.
Oh I do that already, 1 is hazard protection, 2 is life support, 3 is multitool. 4 summons my ship.

Except its not really a challenge? and even automated I still need to have the materials to do so on me.
You can also usefully set hotkeys for things in the Quick Menu for instant access for many functions or toggle. I prefer to play the game on controller connected to my PC and also indirectly have the hotkeys I want assigned to buttons on the controller.
I chose to double tap a shoulder button or long press a joystick click for various Quick Menu hotkey functions. Controller keys can be set in game with Steam Configuration but its best to make sure Steam is in Big Picture mode when setting up controller layouts. It's more reliable saving and recalling set ups when starting the game.
Worth pointing out is that not many players are aware that the blue red indicators on a character's back packs do actually indicate the levels of life support or shields. Quite fun when playing VR with a friends to point out their life support needs attention. : D
That would have been my first suggestion too but some people don't like using "cheats" even when it's a sandbox game and it solves their problem precisely
