Rewards like inventory expansion or tech modules are for the expo only... (they're just there to speed up progression and keep you focused on the expo path).
If you started the expo as a new save file, then when you end the expo, you will convert the save to a normal game mode... (I don't know exactly what you get to keep in this case as I've not done this myself). You will then have access to the story (tutorial) questlines and such
If you started the expo within an existing save (this might be the case for converting from expo to normal game too, but I don't know...)
You will be able to transfer a selection of tech modules and other items via the expedition terminal on the Anomaly.
You will also be able to transfer the multi-tool and starship you are actively using when you end the expo, they will cost a few thousand nanites each (only one copy of each unless you encounter a bug... I was able to make infinite copies of my starship after the Adrift expo)
If you wait until goals will be reached, you will be able to claim it for free.
Also, remember that your daily max contribution is 150 kills, no point in grinding for more in a given day, it wont increase the counter ;)
You can also do the daily and weekly quicksilver missions; quicksilver also transfers back directly.
Other things that could be nice to take back with you are salvage frigate modules and inventory slot items (to take to the next expedition if you've maxed them out in your main save)
Yeah, farming whispering eggs on low atmosphere planets is handy for early game nanites as you can easily run away if you don't have the firepower to fight the horrors, but once you get a decent weapon it's much faster to get nanites from killing sentinels and selling the tech drops from salvaged glass... (just don't open the modules or they'll sell for only 16 nanites each instead of 400-500)
planet Hunt XI in the Uooiiji (R4) system has a ridiculous amount of curious deposits (runaway mould) that can be refined into nanites. For those who are new, you can build a base next to a bunch of them and they will respawn every time you travel a certain distance away (do not modify the terrain they spawn on!). You can also get the blueprint for the medium refiner from the Anomaly to refine them. The refiner does not require any power or fuel to operate.
