Got my first freighter
I resisted for a long time but eventually bought my first freighter. Recruited a handful of assorted frigates, sent them on missions. Sat and (metaphorically) twiddled my thumbs while waiting for them to come back.

I must be missing something, but at what point is that supposed to become fun?

Never.

Freighters are really nice mobile bases that you build in a designated area for, but aside from that they're mostly just a glorified resource trickle.

Oh, I guess they're also useful for multiplayer, since if someone's parked in your freighter they won't need to spend warp drive fuel if you warp with the freighter.

I like using it for storage. Set up all storage containers in there, keep the first one empty (0), and then color code the rest, so when you empty your exosuit inventory, it goes into each assigned storage container, while any items you don't have yet go into 0, which you then empty yourself, until eventually it basically always filters them itself. Also, I like being able to summon my freighter into whatever system I'm in, so I can call in my exocraft without making anything on the planet.

I don't even know how to get more frigates, though I'd like to lol. Still just have the 1 it started with. How the hell you get more frigates? Also, how do you find the upgrade modules for your freighter (the ones for researching new rooms n stuff)? I thought I'd just find one passively at some point, but I still have none, so I can never research more things in it, which is annoying.

It's nice and all but functionally I think all it would do is save an inventory slot that the exocraft summoning station takes, with more investment if you need to pull exocraft into starsystems that need hyperdrive upgrades.

Ahh I see... idk how anything works yet tbh, still very new lol. You just need to carry that exocraft summoning pad around with you, and plop it down anywhere to summon your exocraft?

Recruitable frigates will have a little money marker on them, usually after you've saved a fleet from pirates.

As for the modules, they show up sometimes when you're digging through crashed freighter wreck containers, and I believe rarely when you accept a reward after saving a fleet instead of buying the freighter.

Ahhh okay. Ive seen a couple of those wrecks. I'll make sure to keep searching em if I see any more. They're kind of annoying to dig around in. Lol sorry for all the edits I keep adding to my posts.

What you're missing is the fun that you're supposed to be having while your frigates are out on expeditions. You don't need to babysit them. :steammocking:

That's what I do, yeah. As long as you have a base somewhere where the depots are placed down, you can slap down the summoning station, call in your exocraft, and pick the station right back up in a neat little prepackaged item.

Honestly, I still prefer it over double-posting.

With the exception of special frigates from Expeditions etc ... I would fire them all and do other stuff. No need to even worry about them in the background.

Just farm Interceptors for money and then use said money to buy nanites. Everything else is vanity and a time sink. Crafting is dead. While it still can be done ... even when it was a thing players had more than they knew what to do with. Imagine those folks on day one of frigates lol ... well when they saw them come back with garbage they have no need for anymore. So a non-starter for them ... and that was years ago lol.

Just another fake game loop with no function {if ever}. I would argue it was always trash. For RP, however, ... what can you say? I mean I felt the tingle at first right? Sought out some nice frigates. I only wish I had the time back once the illusion cracked.

Again will never bash on RP ... it is the only krytonite to my "function". I wanted to like it more, but like everything in this game is has no soul. Like the sociopath that made it lol. This game is an apathy simulator. Both in the game and how others play it.

It is probably one of the only games I have grown to hate more over time lol.

I think NMS is best approached with a "Journey, not the destination" approach, or at least a "Make-your-own-goals" viewpoint. Ultimately, I think the game just might not be for you, or any others with a more utilitarian approach to their gameplay style. And there's nothing wrong with that, there's plenty of critically acclaimed games I have no personal interest in.

It's passive income. Take 5 minutes today, and you'll get a bunch of stuff tomorrow. I don't know what you expected.

Frigates are passive/idle income. You're not supposed to wait for them.

The fun part of freighters is making them a high warp travel mega mobile base
Edit: you can also upgrade the frigate expeditions by getting Freighter Modules at Derelict Freighters

I have almost 700 hours in the game and have no idea how to do that, what's the trick?
