What's the point of co-op on a normal save?
Tried playing with a friend and its basically we just are near each sometimes other while we just get stuck doing our own quests. Heck even the environment isn't consistent, we started brand new and the weather events seem scripted in the tutorial stuff same with sentinels on some quests, so when i had a storm trying to get my hermetic seal right away and buddy was like 2 quest steps behind me with our ships 2 feet apart he didnt have a storm warning until he had to get his hermetic seal and then it wasn't storming for me. If we can't build together, and cant progress quests in a party, its better to play solo so you aren't stepping on each others toes on scans for cash it feels like

You describe it in a very concise manner. That is what multiplayer is for this game. A lot of players did not want MP to become a requirement to play the game so HG just made it an option.

Essentially, it is playing the game by yourself with company.

You just have to use your imagination. Hopefully just having your friend there was enough? I mean if it was stable and you all were able to communicate ... how hard is it to time up your missions together. As to the storm ... yeah, as you witnessed, it is scripted.

True enough ... if your friend is going to "hold you back" and annoy you, then there is no point in MP.

The only thing I would say different than Mr. B. above if that MP is how it was always intended save a few degrees of freedom that were removed after 5 mins due to some bad behavior. It was never changed to something else because players truly wanted to play alone or not be dependent on others ... that is made up.

It did not exist on day one ... but is what players, en mass, expected. Some wanted more. I liked it when it first dropped, but I am a "good guy" ... I like the random interactions with other .... or seeing people fly in and land on my Freighter .... or randomly join my game and start a game.

These were fleeting moments ... random and lively with total strangers. That was taken away ... so now it must be pre-planned with "friends" lol. ... just another fail system sadly.

the point of MP : people pleasing patch to generate positive attention and sell the game more.

As you can see here :
https://steamcharts.com/app/275850

June 2018 : 1k average concurrent players
July 2018 (multiplayer patch) : 14k average concurrent players

The "NEXT" update that added multiplayer interactions basically started the redemption arc for NMS and since then youtubers can't stop praising the game.

As for the actual feature, it's mostly useless. Sync and rendering issues etc. The best use cases are touring bases and convenient teleport to certain locations.

that's what it felt like. especially with some quests just glitching out when i was playing with friends ( a trace of metal never spawning the mech just infinite waves of sentinel trash). guess ill just look back into pulsar or other shared ship space games with friends.
