There are some small but very useful tips that one can gain out of watching some youtuber's guide on how to start NMS, though I would also say that they do too much min-maxing.
I once watched a guide, and the first thing he said you should do once you reach your ship, is uninstall the rocket launcher.
ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE ADVICE.
But... I did learn exactly one thing from his video: I learned how to boost jump. I didn't even know that was a thing because the game never mentions it, and you almost never melee (only if you completely run out of mining beam fuel and you have no carbon to refill it with). I forgot that it was even possible to melee in the first place, until I saw that video.
I only use the photon cannon. That's it.
Back on topic: I love doing the tutorials. All of them, even though they do tend to be a bit confusing even after 8 years and twenty or more playthroughs. For me, they're still loads of fun. Even the 10 totally non-random base computer warps to the exact same abandoned building just to learn about Laylaps.
I love the speedrunning aspect of it, after all this time. Knowing about the two scripted storms -- one 30 seconds after you're told to go get a Hermetic Seal for your broken starship, and one 30 seconds after you build your first Base Computer.
I think it's great fun to do all the Artemis missions, summon the Anomaly for the first time, and expand the base for Apollo -- while overlapping your time by doing all the base hireling missions, and then eventually building the Mind Ark for Null's plan.
I'd change a few things if I had my 'druthers, but overall I think the tutorials are a blast.
1. Go find a (insert building type here) -- when they really mean "Go to this specific building and only this specific building and not one like it." Like dude, a transmission tower is right over there. Why can't I use that one? You said "FIND". I found one.
2. The base-computer warps. Send me to ten different systems and planets -- not the same exact abandoned building each time. Come on, man!
Give the rocket launcher a try sometime!
What you want to do is strip the shields with the Photon, and then quickly switch to rockets and give em a blast.
It will literally one-shot ships attacking freighters, and pirates that hostile scan you, it rips 50-70% off of their hull in one blast.
It's awesome early-game.
Now, if you dump your photon cannon in a SC slot and you have 3 s-class upgrades for it, then yeah... you probably don't need the rocket launcher though it can still give you a quick burst of DPS when you're fighting a dreadnought.
EDIT: It's also worth noting that rockets have homing too, if there's enough space between you and the enemy for them to lock on and follow. They also have more range than the Photon, and they also receive astoundingly massive damage bonuses if you hit a ship in the back (guaranteed one-shot on any enemy starship if you hit one in the back after taking its shield down).
Yes, I really should switch up my space combat style after 8 years. This is good advice, Maestro, and I'll try and heed it next playthrough.
Another piece of advice if you're looking to switch things up? Get a phase beam and its upgrade that you build (not the damage upgrades, those are unnecessary). Only use it when the enemy has shields for an instant shield refill on your own ship lol. You literally can't die.
But yes back on topic...
The Base Computer questline really needs a revamp in general. The wait times need shortened (or eliminated entirely), and they really need to not REQUIRE you to build the things they teach you. Just obtaining the blueprint should advance it to the next part of the questline. But nah, it's going to insist you build it even if you had no intentions of ever building the thing, and it stinks when it's a technology and you're short on slots. But you can't progress the stupid questline until you build the fricken thing.
Also, despite them saying that ANY base computer should suffice for the questline, I've yet to see it work like that, ever. It's always your very first base, and ONLY that base.

The guy in the video I watched, said it's a speedrun tactic.
In a video that is supposed to be tips and tricks for new players.
I think he's out of his ducking mind.
New players do not need speedrun tactics. And yes, you can find copper literally everywhere. A single copper pimple has 10x the copper you get out of uninstalling the rocket launcher.
