Game keep crashing every 15 minutes
Hey everyone,
I recently bought the game but I couldn't play more than 15 minutes in a row due to the game crashing.
It's always the same type of crash: the screen turns black/ freeze but is still running. I can still move around in the game and open menus (I can hear the sounds too).
I play on High settings with DLSS quality.
My config :
RTX 3060 Ti
i7-11700F 11th gen
16go RAM
SSD
Did it already happen to someone else? If yes, how can I fix?

There should be a crash dump file
If you can upload your crash dunp file into a cloud, with permission to download it, I´ll look into it
it should be in :
WinKey + R opens RUN than copy this: %localappdata%\Temp

and looks like :
NMS_crash_xxxxxxxxxx_NMSVersion_0xCrashcode_SteamID.dmp

I have the same frequent black screen problem (sometimes a white screen that if I toggle away and back is then black). The problem is there is no crash file because the game has not actually crashed; it's still running, I can move around, I can blindly key my way through menus and do things like E into and out of a near enough starship or vehicle and fire my multitool etc. But the screen is no longer displaying the game; my character is effectively blind. I have to toggle out of game and right-click "Close window" on the taskbar icon to shut it down so I can reload.

I'm on a GeForce RTX 40 series on a three year old HP Omen 17", most recent driver, no GForce overlay, have tried every anti-aliasing method without it making an appreciable difference, and yeah am getting kind of tired of dealing with this for months now without finding a real fix anywhere.

Basically sometimes when I log in I'll black screen as soon as I start trying to move, or within a few minutes of starting to move, while other times I can play for hours without issue. Recently crashed >10 times just trying to load into my freighter docking bay and move up to the command deck on my then-current save, tried loading an older save it came up just fine, then returned to the freighter save and... it loaded fine too!? There is no apparent logic behind when the graphics crashes occur (possibly more likely to happen if I try to move right away rather than standing motionless for a bit after the screen first draws, though that definitely made little to no difference with the freighter).

This is just another day ending in Y with No Man's Sky (crashed three times already). Grand total I've accomplished was load the game, start to move around (crash #1), reload and get in my starship, fly around to locate some fungus, land and start harvesting (crash #2), reload and start to move towards the fungus to harvest (crash #3). Decide to take a brief break to once again check for a solution.

Is there anything other than a crash report that might help, or any way to get the game to cough up similar data when it's not actually totally crashing, just failing to display any more?

(Now to go back into game and try yet again to harvest the fungus so I can make some acid so I can craft self-greasing servos for my minotaur. Joy.)

@MsBarrows
No error code if it crashes ?

You may have a look into your windows Event Viewer for more Info about that crash.

WINKey+R opens RUN, here type eventvwr

Here expand Windows Logs and look under Application for warnings with a Timestamp of that crash.

Copy&Paste the details here, so we can check it

Another thing you may try , run NMS in a clean boot .. to make sure that no other app in the back is the reason :

Disable all but Steam

I have the same problem and similar Omen 17. It is not crashing as such, but just as you describe the game is still running (ie not a processor fail). I have not seen this type of failure in any other game. I have come to the conclusion that it is the graphics card crashing. Dropping the graphics down to standard has helped to reduce the frequency of blackouts. This is interesting as NVIDIA GEFORCE Experience optimises this game to Ultra! I think that suggests I may be on the right lines because accepting that looked beautiful but crashed every minute or so. Also it seems to go down when there is a lot of screen activity, and I have even stopped it progressing a few times by standing still and turning back to face the "image already loaded".

I have recently gone back to NMS after several years because so much has been written about how successfully it has been developed. However I don't think I will put up with this aggravation for much longer.

Thanks for your answer, it's exactly whats happening. I'm a new player so I was wondering if it was my PC or the game

@Tenderfoot
Weird thing is that benchmarks says that 3060 Ti runs at 120 fps in High settings, but I'm still getting crash even though I limited my frames to 60.

@Musashi
Thanks for trying to help! I will try to check the eventvwr but it may be the same problem as before: there is no crash, I always AltF4 the game. I'll look into this

We both have the same video card, mine is Nvidia brand, so idk which one you have. Now the memory, might wanna double that. I also have a better cpu, which it is i9 11th generation at 3.5GHz. If you already update your drivers, etc. Make sure your pc isnt over heating, it can cause it to crash alot.

I got this dell pc some years ago, they put in i7 cpu and this Nvidia RTX 3060ti as well. But only one fan blowing out in the back and a cpu fan. It gotten so hot and crash alot. Glad it didnt damage or burn the hardware in that mini case. I wont buy anything from Dell and no point wasting money on alienware either. They dont seem to understand what they are doing when building a rig.

So one day i decided to build my own rig, larger tower multi fans, cooling cpu system, etc. That dell had a strange looking PSU and i dont think it was enough power output. So i got plenty with certified rated PSU, etc.

So ever since i got that rig built, never had any problems with this game and play it for long hours. Default settings were 2k at high, i change the resolution to 4k and stay on high. Look great, ran smooth and sharp looking picture or image while playing.

I got a feeling his pc got overheated, might wanna check and see how hot it get and having some fans in that case isnt going to be enough. Cooling system, does help out alot.

My Omen 17 does get very hot and I suspect that is a factor, however HP diagnostics run even when hot do not identify any problem. Unfortunately there is no specific test for fan or graphics card in HP suite of tests. Also hard to predict failure - can happen when system is cold. The other day I booted up and immediately launched NMS. it loaded but failed almost immediately, then twice more before "sellting down". I always exit to desktop and start again, doesn't seem to need restart or shut down.

As they say - it's a mystery

If it is still running in Taskmanager , you may create a memory dump
What you could do is :
Create a crash dump file .. its called NMS.dmp and if you upload that file (uncompressed) into a cloud with permission to download, I may have a look into it ...
For this :
Run NMS ,,, than open Taskmanager .. Select Processes..right click on NMS and choose

This is exactly what is happening to my game right now as well and I'm only on an integrated card.

Make sure you cap your FPS at the top of the list to 60.

Miraculously had no black screens yesterday, but had one within minutes of starting play today. Followed these instruction; the NMS.DMP file it generated is on the huge size, 11.81GB in total. Took me a bit to find a place online where I had enough space free for the upload. And then of course took an age to upload that much data. Hope this helps in identifying the cause:

{LINK REMOVED}

...and now the forums keeps removing the mediafire link I'm trying to include. *Pounds head gently against keyboard*

Gah. It's on mediafire at file/3gjkhmkew8lqo2w/NMS.DMP/file see if that remains in the post.

Im running a 3070 and crash almost immediately in VR as soon as I encounter any kind of loading screen after the initial. So, surface to planet, vise versa, or galaxy map warp to another star system... Crash. And by crash I mean lag out with GPU pegged at 100% and in full reprojection unable to do anything. Running only on enhanced straight down the board, and regular TAA. I swear DLSS is even worse.
