Several ways to get them if you are willing to wait. Guild station masters hand them out- for free if I remember right. Some of the station missions as a reward but you have to have very good rep with the race running the station. The derelict freighter missions and your frigate missions will include them rarely.
Warp into a system, find the cluster of NPC ships that is either there just before you or seems to warp around just behind you. You know, the main and only ones. Fly up to the ones that have the roundish cargo pods all along the sides and hover your ship reticle over each one and it'll tell you if there's a module inside. Pew pew, auto-adds to your inventory, warp out.
It''s random though so you might go 10 systems without seeing one then you find 3 in a row and suddenly you've picked up 5 in less than a hour. All other methods are just as random, but without any easily repeatable method to the madness. This way is the mathematical quickest solution not taking the overall RNG into account.
Guild reward resetting
Those are the two best ways. Freighter farming will get you more secondary rewards (resources, units ala smuggling illegal goods that drop). Guild resetting requires either standard mission farming or redeeming enough items to get rep up first, but will primarily get you slot items, nanites and frigate upgrades.
Odd thought because I'm already upgrading everything else including Exosuit like crazy. The one thing I'm NOT upgrading is my freighter however due to not getting any upgrade modules even after doing everything including searching freighter cargo pods.
And it's pointless anyways. I mean.. nothing I can't live without so why make them so impossible to find? It actually seems broken how rare they are please someone confirm this.
I can just do it all in my starship but wow why make it ten thousand times harder to upgrade the stupid freighter with same stuff....
You get the frigate module from the engineering bay. There is exactly 1 per entire derelict freighter. It is by far the worst way to get them.
Engineering bay? Are you talking about the wrecked freighters on the surface or out in space? There's both. Also where is this engineering bay? Never seen anything like it. Wrecked freighters for me have several things: about 5 crates with radiation after you open them. And a central sphere thing that gives you some backstory. That's it. No frigate modules.
Derelict freighters are something you can pay for coordinates for from scrap dealers, or get a weekly coordinate from Helios on the anomaly from. They are fun little combat adventures primarily. If you haven't seen/completed the questline for them you probably have to do more warps or continue the main storyline (don't remember which triggers them.) You actually land on them and explore rooms on foot fighting aliens ala Alien/GTFO kind of thing.
Crashed freighters rarely have them yes but it's pure RNG iirc, not reliable at all.
Yeah there are actually quite a few things in the game 'locked' behind completing the story or warping a number of times. Not sure exactly what the design philosophy was, probably not allowing the player immediate access to the 'best' stuff.
