If i had to guess, id say you only bring back your active ship and multitool at the time that you exit the expedition and whatever bases you made. You definitely bring back the Grub egg/pet too, as that's one of the rewards.
There is a desk / station in the Nexus to the right of the main quest giver object. Maybe check that to see if it gives details about ending the expedition or indicates the number of item slots you can fill to bring back. There will be a confirmation popup when you end the expedition letting you know it will convert to a normal save and are you sure yes/no. So as long as you dont go past that point you can click around in there to see.
When the expedition is complete you can exit back to you primary save. Any bases you created are appended to the primary save. In reverse, you can now bring back a selection of items from the expedition that you acquired. Choose items from tech or cargo inventories and transfer them to the slots displayed at the expedition terminal at the Anomaly.
Similarly as before, you can now copy back any multi-tool from the expedition or any ship used in the expedition. Swap to the multi-tool or desired ship you want to take with you BEFORE exiting the completed expedition. The expedition will complete only when the optional tasks are completed by the community or presumably when the expedition deadline has passed.
A large sum of Nanites will be needed to purchase the copies of the ship and multitool taken into an expedition or exiting back from an expedition. Even if it is the same tool you want to take back, perhaps because the class or inventory or tech has changed and improved. This is how duplicates of tools and ships (with their improvements perhaps) can be made on an established save, by taking part in an expedition with the established save.
Note that taking part in an expedition from an established save appears to be one method of copying ships on an established save, that you might want to make duplicates of including their tech installed, Taking part in the expedition on a new save, opened just to do the expedition, does not have any copying options as it is an independent save.
Once exited from the expedition any items not transferred across to an established save at the terminal, are calculated by the game into equivalent units, currency and added to the established save.
When ending the expedition that was started purposely from a new save, any items gained from the expedition remain on the save unaltered and progress in the game remains. The save simply converts to a Normal save or the save mode type of the expedition.
I haven't been willing to experiment with any of my existing saves, but i just might now.
I got a headache trying to type all that. LOL (caught at an idle moment here)
I do make a back up of the game save folder anyway every once in a while just to avoid save problems or experiment with the game.
I think much of the theory is correct having just recently tried most of it all out on the current expedition. Hello Games have done something quite clever really. It's complex if you start to think about it too much.
The thing I learned is to best join the expedition using an established save. It's more fun and gives you more choice in completing the thing and sometimes faster too. Also you have a choice to make duplicates of things if wanted. : )
I was surprised actually how well HG have managed the game to calculate everything gained from the expedition for you and lists all the achievements and values scrolling though the screen as you exit. A player does not lose out from anything they must leave behind in the expedition.
I like too how you can exit and rejoin to continue the expedition too. That was a clever thing HG added, perhaps so established players can still play their other saves without interruption and use less game slots for junk expedition saves. ; D
Sadly this expedition doesnt have anything unique that only the characters that ran it get. (aside from the liquidators outfit, IF the community completes all the goals)
