Well... Liquidators does have similar vibes as Helldivers

It is a definite, and very nice, pastiche of Starship Troopers, but apparently that movie and the Helldiver games strongly influenced each other. So might just as easily be referencing Helldiver. Or both. But I like all the references to SF novels and movies throughout NMS in general (even though most of them go way over my head ;-) ), some people at HG really seem to be passionate about the genre!

Starship troopers novel was written in 1959. The first starship troopers film was released in 1997. Hell divers 1 game was released in 2015.

Extremely simplistic, but basic description.
The Liquidators expedition in No Man's Sky is loosely based on Starship Troopers, is a laid-back and entertaining gameplay stint around it, and that's it. Nothing in depth like Helldivers.

I'm familiar with Starship Troopers, good movie. Inspiration this update took from it is surface deep though.

NMS doesn't have the budget to do anything more that might require the purchasing of license agreements. Besides, that's all Starship Troopers (hollywood versions) is: cheesy story focused on space marines killing space bugs. What they've done here is just make it fit into the NMS universe. Super simple, and fun enough with standard weapons you can even bring a friend to fight with. Super modded weapons still go through them too easy imho.
