Frigate expeditions can sometimes bring star metal, though it is a long wait.
from memory, like this eg:
CD = Cadmium Drive
ED = Emeril Drive
ID = Indium Drive
EW = Emergency Warp Drive
UG = upgrades
but the key is to place them and look to the right at the warp distance... move them around and watch how the distance changes... i just go for the largest distance and the layout may not be in the specific arrangement depicted but the upgrades are always in the corners and the drives making the plus with the hyperdrive in the middle...
it should also be noted that you can place more upgrades in the other sections of the ship, too... i have one ship that has the above in the Technology area with additional upgrades in the main storage area and now with the new cargo area, there's room for even more... the trick is, as noted above, to watch your warp distance meter on the right...
You don't need Indium to make the Indium drive for your starship. You only need it for a Freighter, but you can get the starship drive first, then use that to get metal from a Blue star system.
