EDIT: It's 30. https://nomanssky.fandom.com/wiki/Frigate That wiki is generally pretty good, though it does have some outdated info in it here and there. You might want to bookmark it for future quick questions like this. :)
You'll be able to launch missions for 100ish fuel. Gas hogs you'll be spending 500+.
Normal support frigates have lower fuel usage than standard frigates but Living Ships, even when setup with support role bonuses do not get that lower fuel cost. It's a 400% difference, at best.
Just my own opinion on the matter. I can go over a year of play and never need to repair a single frigate, but using fuel happens every single day.
Recruiting regular support frigates and filling any non-support roles you want in your fleet with all Living frigates I can get behind though.
Frigates (30 max)
Support = 5
Exploration = 5 (Normandy)
Industrial = 5
Trade = 5
Combat = 5
Organic = 5 (The Leviathan)
The Leviathan and Normandy are both from expeditions, if you don't have them you can use the related type, for the organic frigates they should be one of each other types (The Leviathan counts as a support).
Its a good idea to sent one of each role type on the same missions for better success rates, support types reduce fuel costs, again organics take the place of another role type with the bonus of bringing back stuff for living ships.
Even though you can have six command rooms you only get up to five missions, leaving one room unused and five frigates left behind.
Nowaday it's:
- 6 for Support, mining and exploration (those that it can be usefull to keep one with your freighter at all time)
- 5 for combat/raider and trade (those that you dont need to keep one with your freighter at al time)
- then the Normandy and the Leviathan (fleet mascots)
Then for each of the daily expeditions send 1 of each types; There's 5 expeditions daily so that will leave you with 1 of each of the usefull frigates in case you need their services....
Used to like the biological ones but they do nothing beside needing your cooking and going on expeditions....
Lately I've been thinking of getting ride of all combat/raider one too, they just keep medling with my space combats unless I dismiss my freighter before engaging ennemies..... I'm probably gonna replace them with biological or even support ones....
3 combat
3 exploration
3 industrial
3 trade
10 support
Normandy
Leviathan
Until I get them to A and S class I need to be very choosy which ones go on which missions but by the time they are all A or S I can just send out all 5 missions each day with 2 support per fleet and hardly use any fuel.
The spare slots are for if I bother doing the living ship quest later, if so I get another 2 living frigates to increase upgrades.
5 - Pirate - Only sent on Combat missions
5 - Pirate - Only sent on Mining missions
5 - Pirate - Only sent on Exploration missions
5 - Pirate - Only sent on Diplomatic missions
5 - Pirate - Only sent on Balanced missions
5 - Support - Sent on random missions as the additional support ship.
No matter what - The Pirate frigates are always going to have less of a stat bonus than their proper counterparts, but sending them on specific missions, has increased their specific mission type runs and I've gotten most of them up to A, B, and S class now.
Once they reach S class, I mix them in with other missions as escorts and such. So far it has worked out just fine with rewards and returns, few repairs if any, etc.
Main problem with Pirate frigates is find them without negatives - like a thief on board, etc. Gotta pay attention when fleeting up :)
Only buy C class frigates.
Never buy a frigate that has been damaged or is at over 25% upgraded.
Never buy one where the crew is uneasy or complains about leaks, spiders (ewww), etc. Their mood should be positive or else >.<.
Never buy a frigate that has anything in a field other than their main, ie., combat with explorer buffs, except for supports which should have all buffs in lowering fuel cost with maybe one that lowers time to send out on longest runs. If any supports pick up stupid stuff like combat, exploration, along the way, they get das boot.
Never buy support C class that uses over 3 fuel.
Never buy a non-support that uses over 7 max, 6 is better but rare.
Have enough organics to send out one per mission for those sweet LS spawning sacs and psycho eggs. I have to admit I take organics more by looks than anything else, matters not the level as their stats are mostly all awful. I feed them up the best I can so they Kind of become the mascots of the fleet, the exception that proves the rule.
In the end I send out one organic, one support, rest in major field of expertise to get two stars over rating, having all at 5 stars is optimum for every mission or mixed bag as needed.
At S ratings missions should use almost no fuel, never get damaged.
At 55 (end of upgrade path) rating normal frigates main stat should be well into the mid 40s.
I try to always leave one or two empty spots in case some fabulous frigate shows up that needs a home. Can also fill in with fancy new combat ones if they fit the mold.
Then the work starts on freighter buffs. I quite enjoy the frigate minigame. ymmv
Yeah they're pretty dope, you need to be flying a living ship to get one though. My entire fleet is organic.
There are. Once you send out frigate missions, you will eventually get the blueprint for a Dream Spiral. Craft it, pulse in your starship, and you will make contact with a living frigate, which you can recruit for free. After that, you use Anomaly Detectors to find additional ones, but you have to pay to hire them, and they're pretty expensive.
I think they're fun because you feed them raw ingredients or stuff that you cook, and the different things you feed them give them different buffs. Each living frigate will have different reactions to different foods and get different buffs, so you have to learn what each thing does to each frigate so that you can feed them appropriately for the kind of mission you want to send it/them on. This, for me, is a source of fun because I like to gather and organize data into spreadsheets, but I imagine it might be very tedious for other folks. :) But, in one of my saves, I'm gathering an all-living frigate fleet and having all sorts of fun collecting data. :)
