Chat only shows boxes with x in it

Things players write is only displayed as boxes with x in it. What can i do to change this?

change it how? you can turn it off but i don't think you can otherwise change how or when it appears... look in the Network tab of the game settings/options...

oh! wait... do you mean you see an X in a box instead of the actual characters? if yes, those are other languages using glyphs not installed on your system... the text is in the writer's native language, generally...

I don't understand why NMS doesn't include the font needed to see the other language characters.

because it comes from your OS AFAIK... and it is not "just" a font... there's tons more character glyphs than the original 255 that PCs used back in the day... over a million for UTF-8 depending on how they're counted... then there's UTF-16 and UTF-32...
