You have to buy slots for the squad with nanites. Then you go looking for squad candidates in the station or trading posts. You recruit them, and decide if you like the pilot stats. You have to pay to raise their class, so you want S or A class pilots if you can find them.
They sort of help you in battle. You still should expect to do most of the work. They act more like bullet sponges and may do some very minor damage. I notice the difference having them but it is not night and day like the Mech AI.
Step 2: Talk to NPC pilots to recruit one.
Step 3: Use the management terminal in the Freighter to spend Nanites to expand your squad to up to 4 pilots, and to upgrade the pilot's ability (class).
Step 4: Sit back and marvel at their uselessness.
EDIT (because I was Ninja'd by Mr. B.)
You can give your squad specific ships by trading an owned ship with them then immediately recruiting them to your squad. They will then fly that ship design, but it will not have/use any of the additional tech you may have installed prior to trading. It will only ever use a standard photon canon weapon. A squad of S-class ships with S-class pilots don't seem to be noticeably any more help in battle than C-class, although there must be some differences in their behaviour.
