Well, 7,3gb of bug fixed are 7,3gb of bug fixes, right? TWhat hellogames does for NMS is better and way more than ANY developer did at ANY time for their games. Thats the best and biggest redemption arc ever.

Like some other games NWS seems to always update the whole game every time, for whatever reason. Whether it's a bugfix patch or a major update.

I'd rather the 7.3GB patch than no patch ANY DAY.

I've really REALLY appreciated that NMS is constantly updated.

I just hope that their next game doesn't turn out with such a bad launch...

I don't play NMS as much as I'd like since I wanna play with friends, and they won't play because "Hurr Durr Game Bad" when they haven't touched it since the awful launch.

Literally not even the same game these days.

Pretty sure it's because the files that are being updated are big themselves.

Like with Bethesda games, you have BSA archives which have the entire archive replaced even if the change is a small change.

You can change a single 1MB file in the archive and have to download ~2GB, since it's compressed.

In this case, it'd be " .pak " files?

Happy to see so many bug fixes! They can ship the full 7gb, I don't mind.

That's not how game updates work. The size of the update is not the size of changes, but the size of the files changed. If you change a small bit of a large file the whole file is downloaded. For optimisation reasons assets are generally packed in most games. This leads to less and more optimised files but also means if you change one asset in a package the entire package must be redownloaded. If you're curious enough, just take the time to look through the NMS game folder and check how few files there actually are and even more so how few of those the vast bulk of the 14GB is actually stored in.

its because of where the files are and how its packed, so sometimes the entire package the file is inside has to be redownloaded... its still alot better than some games

Yes. Games files are big compressed archives, changing just one line of code in such a file would require to unpack it entirely, replace the bit that needs to be changed, then repack it...

It's way simpler and faster to just replace the entire packed file even if 99% of it is unchanged.

As I understand it (I'm no techie), computers work more efficiently when they are required to juggle fewer files. So, they "prefer" a small number of very large files over a large number of small files, even though the total amount of information is the same. Because they require a lot of juggling, this is why games, in particular, tend to use large, consolidated/merged files, to make the game as a whole run faster and more efficiently.

The downside of this, at least for people like me with very slow internet, is that if you make even a tiny change to one of those large files, the whole large file has to be redownloaded. Frankly, I'm happy to deal with that in exchange for a game that runs better.
