It's a Sandbox with a couple of storylines to follow when you get bored or want to do something different for a while.
Rushing to the end is silly. There really is no end game in this game if you don't like building bases. But then how many bases can you build before you go, "It's not worth the time."
Then there is hunting ships. If you don't like that well good luck, it's part of game end.
I don't rush. I pop into a space station get all the quests and do them. It's paid off for me with the new update all the rep paid off. One vendor gives me free stuff if I want it. Others give me 50% off.
If your thing is rushing to the end of games skipping as much as you can just to get to the end, you'll run out of things to do in this game quickly. Maybe 10 hours probably a lot less.
Take your time and you'll run out around 100 hours. Now its base building or ship hunting which is all that's left. If those are your thing delete the game, it's over for you.
They are wrong. Don't settle on a planet that is 'good enough'. There's quintilions to choose from... Be picky.
There is no universal answer to this question. People play NMS in vastly different ways once they complete the main story. Nobody can tell you what the best way is. It's a personal choice.
But yeah, "don't rush" is a good advice.
Have a bit. Go fire up the game. Have another bit. See what catches your attention, whatever that is. Have another bit. Not too much! Just enough to get a bit of a glow going.
And then just do whatever. Thing about this game, is it's a game where you have to stop worrying about what to do, and just go do. If you can't just do on your own, the bourbon will help.
Note: It doesn't have to be bourbon. Drink whatever you want, but be responsible. Etc.
I.E. Avoid the Main Storyline as much as possible, and "do your own thing" instead, for as long as yo can.
If you don't understand the game, it's probably a very good idea to start a new save and follow the tutorial. Make sure to pay attention to it, read carefully, and do what you're prompted to do when you're prompted to do it. Trying to do your own thing when you don't know what you're doing is only going to lead to less understanding, but if you actually follow the tutorial, you will learn the basics. The tutorial meshes with and progresses naturally into the game's main quest, and if you follow that, you'll be introduced to all the basics of both the gameplay and the lore. You can also follow the side quests when they trigger, if you want to; they're all basically tutorials that introduce you to various content that's been added over the years.
Once you have the basics down and have a good idea of how to play the game, then you figure out what you enjoy doing in the game and then you build a play style based on those things, which are going to be different for every player. It is a sandbox game, after all. Once you have a good idea of what to do, you can start a new custom save and disable the tutorial so you don't have to play it again, and then you can go off and do your own thing. Or, you can just continue to play the save you worked through the tutorial in. It's up to you.
