Where do they get their funding from?
I've been curious, and have no idea where to find such information. But I don't understand how Hello Games have been able to fund all these amazing free updates for No Man's Sky for so many years? I mean, with no paid content, where do they get their revenue? I get that the launch on Switch generated additional sales, but does it outweigh the cost of publishing and maintaining their game on an additional platform?

In no way is this critique, I love what they have accomplished with NMS and a part of me wishes they'll keep expanding it forever and ever, but reality doesn't work like that and with every update I always expect them to say "This will be our last" and yet they say "Excited to share what we've been cooking up next"

They get new sales with each update and the release in new platforms. It also helps that they have never reduced the base price.

I bought it for $25 not too long after launch when the game was....not very good.

New sales. Think they are up in the 8mil level atm, maybe more.

You can just look them up and see that it is a healthy business that didn't decide to get overly big, still love what they do and obviously spends it's money wisely. Most folks would have flucked it up somehow. We should all be so smart.

They sold A LOT of copies. All over the world.

They are also a pretty small company, like 30 people or so.

And Sony gave them a nice chunk of change but it's all NDA. Sony's fault the game released like it did. They wanted a return on their investment and were not concerned if the game was actually ready.

Stellaris (Paradox) could learn from them. Just saying.

All updates are rolled into the base game, maintaining a high price after years of release. Lowers entry requirements.
Game is playable on many platforms.
Publicity after update continue to bring new players, hence more sales.

At least that is how I understand it.

Of course they probably have alot of investments generating more income. They won the lawsuit against the guy that claimed they were using his formula. So they probably license their tech to other studios as well.

With smart investments and well managed assets, one can grow without resorting to some of the practices that hungry studios do, like DLC and MTX.

Yeah Paradox is very predatory but so are many other companies these days.

Larian Studios and Hello Games are worthy of the highest praises.

Great, thanks!

Yeah I figured their sales would've reached som kind of plateau by now that the money from sales are minimal, but as many of you points out. I guess it havent? ^^ And I did ponder their studio size as well, playing into them affording to continue. Great responses ya'll! Cheers to hopefully even more great NMS updates (also I am crazy excited about Light No Fires)!

Small company, which means that there aren't that many mouths to feed.
The game also started as one of the biggest scams in video game history, which probably led to more publicity and attention outside the target audience.

They pretty much have plateaued. That is why (a) they released switch version, (b) released mac version, (c) updated for a VR2 version, and (d) almost ready to release LNF. The initial sales for NMS were enormous (for a small company), which bought them time.

Their best new marketing strategy was the release of Starfield. They got so much press off that, all for freeeeee. Hope they sent Bethesda(BGS) a fruit basket and maybe a bottle of England's finest whiskey. :steamhappy:

True, there were many times when I was playing Starfield and where flying in space I felt that I wanted to switch to NMS : p
