No Man's Sky

The new ship-building feature is terribly underwhelming, in my opinion
Okay, so...

You can build Fighters, Haulers and Explorers. You can argue that these core types of ships are all you need, but none of them have any specific intrinsic features that (the majority) other ships have that are considered of value to players.

No Shuttles, no Solars: these two are baffling to me why they're not also allowed. I don't know anyone who would willingly play with a Shuttle as their main ship, but I don't think they are so complex that they couldn't be implemented (they may have the same problem as Exotic ships, see below). Solar ships and the unique solar sail part/component is probably one of the nicer features of any ship class but NOPE, you can't make solar ships either, arguably the one kind you'd rather have over the three core types they added. Let's hope that in the future these are implemented, but I'm not confident we'll see that before Light no Fires...

Even Exotics are not available! Even though the system as it is would take "forever" to find literally the ideal ship parts without resorting to some idiotic database of universal coordinates to guarantee you find each and every part you want. I understand why they wouldn't allow that, unfortunately. Exotic is a category that incorporates a few specific cores that wouldn't incorporate with all of the other possible combinations considered exotic ("squid" ships, for instance). It would require splitting the category into separate new types and the way these ships are embedded in old code might be too much of a hassle to just disentangle them.

It's obvious why they don't allow Living ships to be disassembled. But at the same time, it should be revisited how you can procure more living eggs after the first instead of spending all of that quicksilver you're grinding over the dailies. If the living ships are LIVING, and we know that there are EGGS, why can't living ships also produce eggs somehow? I don't think this is an unreasonable ask.

But then the weirdest thing hits you in the face. NO SENTINEL SHIPS. The most modular, most recent, most "coolest", the only kind that can hover in the middle of a planetary airspace (which IMO Shuttles should also be able to do), with an amazing Hyperdrive jump distance to boot, can't be created out of Sentinel ship parts. They could have had extra requirements such as an activated brain like the rest of them, but no! This is... almost unbelievable. Are they thinking of "balance" in these restrictions? Sentinel ships are practically the best type, are extremely easy to access, are worth lots of fast credits if you're just going to scrap them... I don't see how denying us the option to make them is "more balanced" than looking out for every very specific part for any of the core three they gave us. Or getting a rando Sentinel ship in the first place.

AND, this is assuming you like the way you have to carry around each and every disassembled piece instead of having some kind of "fabricator blueprints" just like you learn every single piece of technology elsewhere in the game! I don't particularly mind it, but it makes the restrictions on Shuttle, Solar and Sentinel ships look even worse when you're combining them with this bloating of inventory usage and you're not getting all of the parts when scrapping, just one of three options.

I sense "three options" is another reason why this system is being so... gimped. Let me guess: it has to do with how the old menu options were coded into the game, with limited slots and no scalable UI potential (for like 10 options in each menu, as an example). It pains me, and it makes me VERY concerned for Light no Fires' future.

Yes: in theory, the new feature incentivizes people to go around and explore the Universe and randomly roll and stumble across a ship part they'd like. But is this it? And I've not tested this, but these crafted ships are also supposedly LESS VALUABLE if you want to trade them in or scrap them again??? What!? I don't get it!

If they're going to "improve" the feature I'd have rather they delayed it instead. If they were in the hurry to push the new space stations and weren't sure about letting us play with ship-building, even though menus would be already in the game showing the feature was coming, here's my counter argument: pirate space stations are still the same inside, none of the newly announced space station things happening on the inner side.

...I think the new ship-building feature is terribly underwhelming as it is right now. I appreciate the effort, but I don't think this was enough. And that makes me a little sad.

I thank you for the time you spent reading this feedback of mine.

Unknown concept that, appreciating what we get for years, 27 big patches and counting, and never a penny charge. But nope, always the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and moaning and complaining. Gamers are spoiled kids at heart. They couldn't tell you what they want but whatever it turns out to be, it's just no damned good. :steamdeadpan:
Me included, I want to color my guppies. Moan moan.

I haven’t tried building a starship yet, but I agree with all the points made. I really loved the idea of living ships producing eggs; which could lead to exotic living ships if they are altered in the egg machine on the anomaly.

Changes I would make:

1). The ship parts that you get out of disassembling a ship ought to be consumable. When consumed, you permanently learn that ship piece and it's added to the database of known ship components.

2). To balance that, when you go to make a ship, you pay the cost of that original part when building a ship that way you don't get a free ship. Since the blueprint is reusable, I'd even support a 2x cost, even.

3). I feel that you should get ALL of the ship's parts when you disassemble a ship. What do they do with the other parts you didn't select? Why can't you re-use them? You take only the hull or the wings and just throw the rest in the garbage? Why would you do that? That makes no sense.

Just wanted to say that I like the changes you suggested. I really did think, at first glance, it was a "learning" system, where you'd learn the parts (or could use nanites to learn some specific parts from the Anomaly) to use with the creator.

As for types argument others have made: I think exotics should be exempted from the system, as well as some of the special ships (like the speeder and that last ship we just got). I could even understand if the Sentinel ships weren't there. But no shuttles or solar? That last one befuddles me. I SO wanted to mod/create a solar ship to sort out the mild annoyances I have with my fully kitted out one. I really love the overall design....
After trying a bit, I have to agree. It is - like basically EVERYTHING they throw at the game - a horribly half-assed feature.
1. Just scrapping one part per ship makes it a huge grindfest.
2. It takes a HUGE amount of inventory space. Why don't the parts get added to a sub-menu of the construction terminal, like at a cooking station?
3. Why just those three ship types? It would even be ok if every terminal would just be able to build ONE type, with those for sentinel, solar and royal ships being more rarely to find.

I don't know anyone who would willingly play with a Shuttle as their main ship
I did for most of my playing time - because it has lots of cargo slots and because it simply doesn't matter at all. The differences between ships are absolutely marginal.
It was the first A ship and I couldn't be bothered to switch ships. I only recently switched to an S Sentinel ship.

So you need either a fighter a hauler or the other one to have the parts?
I thought you's have to buy the parts somewhere, I went all over to find them but couldn't find anything (yeah you guessed it I don't have even one of those "normal" ships)

Edit: I bought a "reactor" lol

Since 2016 the NMS team has been giving us content. They have my faith that improvements will be made. Thank you NMS team for bringing this to the game! Looking forward to the direction you take this..
Yeah, underwhelming it is... I just bought a bunch of haulers from NPCs only to discover that I can extract only three basic parts: cockpit, wings and thruster. So, um, yeah.... Painting is surely nice, but....

in any colors you want

...there is no black. What is HG's problem with black color? Why is my all black armor actually purple-green? Why is my black interceptor purple? Why can't we have black in this game?

My first red/white hauler turned out nice though, but I was hoping for more. Maybe in the next update?

seems like all of you missed the part where they said "More to come" at the end of the trailer smh

Nah, I'm willing to give them time, they've proven that they address things eventually, I just would have appreciated being able to repaint my existing ships as one of the FIRST things they released as part of customization. If it happens down the road, I'll be a fully satisfied squirrel. :)

Probably because EVERYONE would paint their ships black... ;) (Well, certainly not everyone, but you get the idea...)

Ahhh, mods, too much the luddite to figure out how to set them up. ESO had a mod manager called Minion. I could work with that, but having to actually do it myself? Nope. I want HG to do it, legit like. Thanks though. Looks cool.
Mods are trivial to install in NMS. It boils down to copying a file into a folder. That's all. Majority of mods come as a single file. Some more complex mods, like terraforming mods, might come with a couple of additional files or a folder with assets.

It gets more difficult if you have too many mods and they start conflicting with one another. But just a couple of mods should be very easy. It's not very technical at all.

But then, so what? Why do they have to force their Windows 8 preferred color palette on all players? Who cares how people paint their ships?

I've wondered the same thing. I've seen people saying steam and reddit that it's to prevent everyone from having black ships. Who cares!! Why would that be a problem in a 99% single player game?

So we have a new system and can now do things we never could before. Yet people complain?
Yes, because it is, like most content in the game, very half-assed.
If you ask a friend for a shovel, but he brings a spoon, you probably would complain, too, right? But why? After all, he brought you something that can dig a hole, too!

No one here has any idea how the system might change in the future.
That's quite irrelevant at this very point.

No one here has any idea of the overall 'vision' the developers want to maintain in their game while still offering players new options.
No idea what that is sopposed to mean or how that excuses sloppy programming.

Every 'it should have had this option' can easily be counter argued. So who is right?
As always - people with actual arguments.
Late (again) - boy this is a rapidly growing thread. My 2 cents are that solar ships came in with the pirate stations so I suspect that they will be customizable at pirate stations when HG art pass those as I suspect they will.

The same may be true of sentinel ships. Think about it, these are a different technology to the normal ones so it would be more likely that pirates would rip them part. It would also give another reason for visiting pirate stations. Then again perhaps there is something in the Autophage story to be added here. Vy'keen hate sentinels so you are unlikely to be welcomed to customise a sentinel ship in one of their stations.

The shuttle missing is, I suspect an omission due to time and the fact it is generally not flown that much. I guess that will get added. Exotics are less likely as they are well - exotic and also seem to follow different design patterns to the 3 that can be customised right now.

As for black ships... 'its a crazy colour scheme - when you press a black button, a black light lights up black to tell you that you have done it...' - Misquote from Hitchhikers.
