What exactly are expeditions

I've owned the game since launch and never really gotten deep into it but have kept it in my library with the intention to dive back in some day.

I've done the early parts of the game a few times but mostly just played creative mode and did some building.

I kept seeing stuff about expeditions but always assumed they were some 'end game' task that i wouldn't be able to partake in so i ignored them.

Now i'm starting to think they are stand alone stories / content that anyone can do?

What is the best way to describe or explain what expeditions are?

Simple explanation: They are timed events, (mini-games), which let you travel from one specific point in the galaxy to another, whilst undertaking several challenges and achievements exclusive to each named Expedition. They introduce you to the game mechanics and some of the game lore.

To add on to the first poster, it's not endgame because you basically start a new character for the expedition, then when it's done you can transfer whatever you earned to your existing character.

They're a short-lived, self-contained scramble to complete a prescribed list of tasks with the aim of unlocking cosmetic rewards that (mostly) cannot be obtained through other means.

Initially you had to open a new save slot on each occasion but as of Omega it is possible to partake using an existing save with the ability to switch back-and-forth at will until the expedition has officially ended, whether due to your completing it or hitting the deadline.

It's a scavenger hunt. Participants win prizes.
