**number pulled straight out of my ass because I'm too lazy to do any kind of research, so if anyone has some actual numbers, feel free to correct me.
Not impossible but you gotta make sure you're warping into a star system that's tagged as already discovered by another player first.... going to un-discovered system cant get you that.
So the difficulty is to find an already discovered star system first.
Doing it at the edge of a galaxy is probably the easiest method.
haah nah, finding one randomly literally has less chance than finding a needle in earth-sized haystack.
as far as i know, there's 18 quintillion planets, even if 8 BILLION people would get the game and play it for 100 years straight, you would probably never stumble on one.
HOWEVER you should be able to see markers in galaxy when free roaming, which makes it easier to free fly and find a system that has somebody's base.
i think highest chance of stumbling on random base, is near the center of first dimension.
Apparently the poor interloper built a base and terrain manipulation or one of the galaxy revisions just ruined it. It was mostly buried and in pieces- no longer connected to each other in some areas. That is the only time I have found one that was not in the original configuration as built. I wish I had taken some photos, but did not think of it at the time.
i remember i was building a beach house in a very pretty bay with a nice wide white beach... turned around to do something and there was a Gek standing there watching me... i kept building and it took me a minute or two to realize it was another player... that has never happened again...
in my two or three non-Expedition saves, i've come across systems discovered by others a few times... sometimes i'll see a base on one of the planets... when i do, i generally visit... mainly because it is hopefully a safe place where i can duck into a building if i need to for some reason... but i also like seeing what others have built... it get lonely out there some times...
There are rando Base Computers waiting to be claimed, I've only seen 3.
My belief so far is, in order to see someone else base, you need to be in the same system at the same moment he is connected. its like a peer2peer multiplayer.
