Is this an MMORPG?
It lists PVP and CoOP which usually means MMORPG but it doesn't seem to list as MMORPG....or can you actually just play as single player in your own universe? I really dont like PVP and CoOPs can be annoying

You can 100% play this game on your own, it's about exploring, base building, space faring and work your way toward the center of the universe (or not at all and just spread your bases all over galaxies and planets.

PVP is very limited afaik it's only available unless you play your save on a multiplayer save and happenstance encounter someone in the same system (or access via Space Anomoly)

CoOP is only via Space Anomoly if you wish to play with others and or friends

I think it technically qualifies because you can form groups with other players and encounter them in game, but the chances of actually bumping into another player without planning or being on the Anomaly (the community hub) are almost nil.

Mechanics wise, there isn't a whole lot that qualifies it for RPG. No levels, just improving gear.

Thank you for both for No Man's Sky info! Much appreciated. You both answered but I can only pick one as topic answer I think :steamhappy:

It can be multiplayer. Not "Massive" though in the sense of having to deal with many other players. And PvP.... meh. There's better games for that. In the end NMS really is an exploration sandbox game with an optional multiplayer element. Which is awesome enough ;-)

It is a SPPTBMP game. (Single player pretending to be multiplayer):steammocking:

What Bufferlow said. You need never tend to the local ruffians again. It is fun sometimes when you get a bit along to see what others are flying but you can just click MP for that but the rest of the time be SP. Unlike most MMOs there are no dailies, no leaderboards, no tons of questlines to follow to lead you through the game forever. There is no cash shop, no costly dlcs and no monthly sub.
When you start there are initial questlines that are actually tutorials that help you learn the game. There are other offshoots you can take to get some interesting things like special ships, weapons and lore. You can go to a central hub and do missions with others but you can just as easily do them solo. It's basically a giant sandbox that some love and others hate.
If you can get the game at half off it's a real bargain. If you play for fewer than two hours you can get a refund. The community is pretty helpful when we're not being silly so any questions, feel free to ask.
Travel safe.

I would not call it an MMORPG. BTW, I've been playing those since before people even knew what they were. I come to NMS to escape from those for a while.

It can be played pretty much like an MMORPG - there are many civilizations, colonies and hubs across the NMS universe, which create their own economies, cultures, diplomacy, and do competitive PvP. In fact, I'd recommend playing NMS like an MMO - the game really blossoms that way. Sure, it's missing large chunks of the necessary framework of a good MMO - anti-cheat, server-side saves, encryption, etc., but it still manages to be fun regardless. After a few recent fixes you can more-or-less reliably get up to 15-18 players in the same system.

That said, most people play this game by themselves, largely out of ignorance - because communty content is not advertised by HG. The universe is huge, and if you don't purposefully come to an inhabited region, your chances of seeing another player in the wild are "once in a lifetime".

Wow, so solo players are ignorant. Frankly, folks that come on the forum and think they know it all are the most ignorant, which becomes obvious as one reads your post.

Yeah I had no idea there was a huge community of players in the Euclid system, there's a group that's dedicated to mapping out an entire area of space forget their name but it's the biggest one I think. Let me look it up. Ah yes. "The Galactic Hub". Check out their wiki and reddit, they even have portal codes to their home world, tons of player structures there lol

It's not an MMORPG
Yes, there can be a lot of people online
Yes, you can role-play, if you want to, but it is not required.
Character development is not really a part of the game. You're just.. whatever you are.

You can engage with other players, but you don't have to. I limit my interactions to slipping people random desserts on the Anomaly while I sit there.

No.

PvP is a toggable setting which require both players to have it set on to work (beware the setting is on by default).
So it's more some sort of a "duel" feature (nobody in their right mind play casually in MP with PvP on in a game that allow wild cheats and modding).
Set it to off and you are gold ! You must believe in your souuuul ! You have the power to know ! You're undestructible !!! Always believe in....

Coops are just an accommodation/gimmick for players who wants to watch each others play or show off their cool looking stuff to others.
You cant really help each others in combat, you all play at the same location (star system) but each player have his own ennemies that others cant even scratch. Tho you can visit each others base and freighter.....

Then there's a MP mode (picked at the main menu before loading your save) that let you host a game or join others that are in your contacts (NMS friends).
Only interesting aspect to this is to visi teach others game, build bases together or do exocraft races (you need to build the track yourself). But it's very glitchy.....

you can turn pvp off and I do recommend it, but the multiplayer is more like parallel play or multiplayer solitaire where everyone's in the same session, but there's not really like shared progress save for Nexus missions and even bases are still the property of the person that lays down the base computer. It's vast and everyone's playing in the same wide ocean, but it's as deep as a kiddie pool really and mp isn't very robust. I would call it technically mmo, but not really an rpg and not an mmo in the sense that most know them
