Freighter Technology Upgrades
Is it supposed to be this hard to collect enough salvaged frigate modules, or am I missing something?

Many, many hours of space station missions, wrecked freighter searches, etc and I've found only 2. I feel like there is some basic concept that I'm missing...

Are there other ways of getting freighter upgrades, such as buying them somewhere, either the modules, blueprints, or constructed modules? Or is this how the game encourages us to sink lots of money into buying better freighters?

I have seen them for free from a couple of guild envoys on my travels in the 2 bottom lines, so you will need to have pretty much max reputation. If you have done a lot of jumps, it might pay to teleport back to some early stations to check if the envoy had them before you had the rep.

Other than that, the grind is real, although a look at the coordinate exchange could yield glyph locations of crashed freighters that always have a bunch of salvaged frigate modules (SFMs) in them.

Also, if you chance upon a crashed freighter with several SFMs or bulkheads, plonk a base down near it because they will respawn in the open cargo pods several days later real time. Make a note of the time though, because if you visit before they have respawned the timer will reset. I generally leave at least 7 days to be safe, but I think might be a bit less than that.

Best source are industrial frigate missions or shooting up NPC freighters.

Find a system that offers a lot of industrial missions and you will have all you need in a few weeks. If you don't get at least one after a few days move your freighter.

I have seen salvaged frigate modules at the merchant guild envoy last line. And I have seen salvaged frigate modules at the mercenary and explorer guild envoys, sencond to last line.

I have also seen cargo bulkheads at the merchant guild envoy.

The big blue square boxes on derelict freighters sometimes have a salvaged frigate module. (The derelict freighter you need a receiver to find.)

Sometimes a freighter has a salvaged frigate module in a cargo pod on the freighter. If you shoot the floating cargo pods around freighters you will lose standing.

I never seem to have any trouble finding salvaged frigate modules. Daily quests have them. They are even free now with rep.

It's harder to find upgrades of the other things. 3 S class lets you send 1 one frigate and 1 support on a mission for 50 to 100 fuel. A huge savings.

I have 40 salvaged frigate modules I don't need. But I still need the other cost saving upgrades this save. Modules rain out of the sky really. Daily quests and free from the vendor with rep. Doing the daily quests get you that rep too. It's a win, win.

I wish there was a way to get those other upgrades other than the RNG Gods. All the other upgrades rain out of the sky but these. I don't want to rain out of the sky like everything else. But maybe make it a little easier other than RNG Goding them.

they rain out of the sky if you kill npc frieghters, i understand why some wouldnt want to do that. but i've always just raided gek and utterly dump their standing.
it's very very fast if you dont care about the cargopods and just kill frieghters

There are several ways to obtain them. The fastest one is to jump to a system in which you can get them for free in the space station once you have enough reputation and then start the cycle "collect -> save -> reload -> collect" etc... You can also find for 2 or 3 systems with them in the space stations and then keep jumping between them and collecting. It requires reputation, which pretty easy to get, and lilttle bit of system exploration and some resistance to get bored.

Thanks for the answers folks. Yeah seems the guild envoy is a great source, but is a bit of a grind to get to that tier. But it also seemed that the more space station missions I did, the more often frigate modules came up and I got a decent amount just from that. MUCH more reliable than wrecked freighters, which is what most of my online searching said to do!

Attacking civilian fleets is the fastest option.

Fly close to the freighter's container before attacking, so you'd know if it's worth attacking (the content is shown so you'll see if it has frigate modules inside)

Do it in outlaw star systems

- Im doing basically this method currently but i attack the freighters without checking their specific haul, for the reason to stock my cargo with the loots and later on selling them on normal system planetary trade posts for huge credit profits.

Also check the space stations mission's, often have easy task for modules and the freighter frigate missions bring few also.

  • Up your rank with the guild(s). They will gift you Salvaged Frigate Modules (SFM) at highest ranks.
  • To rank-up, you will have to do space station missions - that themselves reward SFM for some mission types. Every station you goto; pick up all the Kill Creature missions. Wait for Kill Monstrosities missions at the Nexus/Anomaly and boom job done. Easiest way to level up ranks, besides gifts.
  • Nexus (in the Space Anomaly) Mission - I collected 4 today in a span of an hour. It helps if the anomaly is populated - as people take missions, the missions & reward change: you'll get one which rewards SFM. Obviously take the mission you are confident of getting done.
  • Crashed Freighter Cargo Pods. Get the Minotaur Radar array and fire away. Another method: buy 10+ Emergency Charts. Keep popping till you get Crashed Freighter. Clear it, pop again till you get Crashed freighter. It won't give you a Point of Interest that you have already marked, so no wastage.
  • Industrial Expeditions. Have a freighter? Send out Industrial missions. They have the highest change (i believe its 10%) to return with a SFM.

I've been getting mine solely through Crashed Freighters, Space Station Missions and Nexus Missions. Gotten a total of 18 in a span say a week of play. Once I unllock the green star drive and am happy with my freighter i'll start sending out expeditions.

Edit; since i wrote this post 15mins ago. I found 2 at a Crashed Freighter & a Nexus missions (build outpost which I did not do) rewarding 1. I'm definitely camping out at the nexus. LOL.

Hard? no, take time? yes.

Nearly every Guild-Envoy has some and the Missions-Agent in at least every second solarsystem has them as a reward, just do missions. The derelict freighters never gave me many, bad RNG-luck I guess. But I get roughly between 2 and 5 every day through the frigate-missions on my freighter. I started giving them away in the Anomaly.

search and shoot freighters and pods in pirate systems , no sentinels...thats where i get mine from

Yep, get mine from the explorers guild on a Gek station, need to be rep of Master to get them for free, not difficult if you have the offerings to donate, the easiest of which is probably the ancient keys as you get 3 spares when you loot ruins. If you've found an extreme world with storm crystals then they work as donations too, haven't tried farming those so not sure if they respawn every storm?

I've only been to 8 inhabited systems, 3 of those were pirate systems leaving 2/5 with Explorer Guild Envoys and 1 of those gives SFM, the other Exosuit Expansion Units.

My experience is that the stock resets each time you portal in so if you find 2 like this you can just go back and forth between them and pick up as many as you need!

I also buy the heavily discounted modules and sell those on the way out for extra nanite profits.
