Just about had enough O2 left as well.
For me, it depends. Sometimes I see six in a small area and mostly never. Average two to three i'd say in 4000 hours of playing.
Hope it helps :)
You have two options, if you don't want to deal with the freakin' loud angler fish monster that pops out of them:
1) Ignore Alluring Specimens. You can also get the Hadal Cores (the "crystals" you pick from an Alluring Specimen) from Underwater Relics. When underwater, use your Analysis Visor to scan and look for a gold icon with two stars. You get one core per relic.
2) In your difficulty settings, turn off Predators. The loud fishie will still pop out, preventing you from grabbing more cores, but it won't attack you and won't be able to damage you. It'll just swim around making its godawful noise. The downside: Turning off predators will turn off ALL predators, so that none will attack you on land, either. I prefer this, myself, because I don't like killing animals, but YMMV, of course.
I'm pretty sure OP Is talking about the angler-fish-like thing that pops out of Alluring Specimens, not the penis worms -- I mean, the eyeball-style abyssal horrors with their paralyzing beams. (OK, so those horrors don't look too much like real penis worms -- Yes, they exist; go google "Priapulids" -- but it's what I'm reminded of when I see them.)
Anyway, I really wish different things weren't called the same thing in this game. I used to be so confused about derelict freighters and why I couldn't land on them, until I found out that there are two different things called derelict freighters in the game.
Just be careful if you do. The fishie isn't hard to kill, really, but it does make a truly godawful noise. Or maybe that's just my sensory processing issues talking. But still, it's objectively loud and jump-scary, at least.
