I dont understand the point of the new ship customization system
So while I was in process of making my own ship, I realized that different parts give different amount of upgrade and cargo slots to your custom ship. I thought that only the reactor affects the stats, and parts are cosmetic, I thought that was the whole point - you may not get the best, but at least you can make it look how you want. What is the point of allowing me to design my "own" ship, if certain cosmetic choices are strictly inferior to others?? There arent that many options to begin with, and some are just worse than others? Why? Just let me design my ship looking the way I want it to look, and fix stats to the reactor... I dont understand this system at all.

The same cosmetic parts will give different stats on different stations.

Have fun reloading systems and stations until you find a decent ship withyour preferred parts ! Yehh exploration gameplay just for you !!!

The "point" is everyone and their brother... sister, cousin and second cousin have been asking for ship building/customization since 2019.... and they (HG) finally added... something.

PS If you are completely LOCKED into a design... and get crap stats in your current system... go to a different system, you will get different results.

Different part combinations will give different slot arrangements and a few starting techs, but they are minor differences. You can still upgrade as you see fit. The differences are most likely an artifact of the game having to reverse calculate a seed value.

If you really want to min-max you can try the same combo at different stations which will calculate different seed values.

Thank you everyone for answers. At least I can try my luck on other stations. But this is so confusing - how hard would it be to just assign stats to the reactor? It's just so odd to see cosmetic parts affecting ship stats...

Thats what they do. Everyone complaining about no MP : here have some useless broken MP feature

Everyone asking for cities : have some settlements (LOL)

Everyone asking for ship customization : this

The fun fact is that medias and general gaming hivemind keeps praising HG because of that, so its actually working

The only thing that matters is the location of super charge slots. That only matters if you want to min-max, which is completely optional.

You will find out that the core experience in NMS exploration is reloading similar locations to get similar items with tiny variations. Goes for planets, ships, multi tools etc.

That "ship builder" if anything is perfectly in line with that philosophy.

Wasnt my experience so far. First 2 systems were a bit samey, but later on I found plenty of novel locations and biomes to keep exploration interesting. It's this particular system that really surprised me and took me out a bit.

You will know every biome by heart after a few more hours.

It's (probably) an artifact of how ships are generated from seed values. When the game was launched in 2016 nobody excepted it to get updates for eight years. Back then owning more than one ship wasn't a thing, ships only had a maximum of 48 slots, and ship customization wasn't even a thought.

This is a bandaid on top of a bandaid.

After trying out the ship building system and found out I still can't edit my existing ship. And how inferior the resulting ship come out, I utter "Well, this is useless then." and go back to continue using the "Exotic" ship (Such as one that look like an octopus or one with it's black spherical hall) I already own.
Or unique ship such as the "Starborn Runner".
Or Sentinel ship.
Because these ship are waaaaaaaay more superior with their 20 to 27 Tech slots.

Warframe and NMS are great examples of design by accretion.

Actually any ship can have up to 60 tech slots with storage augmentations

I must admit, I was a little disappointed to see that only Fighters, Haulers and Explorers were available to be customised..

I was hoping it would be all ship types, and I was quite keen on making custom Exotic ships but most of all Solars, to play around with all the different sails and colours etc..

Hopefully HG plan on expanding this system in future to let us customise more ship types.
At the very least Shuttles should be custom capable.

I expect there are more technical issues with other ship types.
For Sentinels maybe their unique parts..
Solar probably has issues with the Sail mechanic, since that's a unique upgrade they come with.
Living ships.. don't even need to talk about them tbh.
And Exotics.. well they're two different ship types in the same category so that's probably messy.. be weird if you could shove a giant guppy fin on top of a squids cockpit.

Still I hope this is on the cards for a future update.
