In other words : You can experience everything that is in the game without doing expeditions at all. You aint missing anything.
You probably didn't have to start over at all. NMS is a game that can look kinda hard and not beginner friendly, but once you figure out how things work and what you can do, you're facing no difficulty whatosever even on hardest settings.
one sec... 🪑+🍺+🍿
Sf is a criminally underrated game that is receiving an overwhelming amount of undeserved hate and criticism based on straight lies.
Nms in redemption arc mode is more or less the opposite, LOL
NMS is a 99.999999% EXPLORATION SANDBOX game. With a basic survival game play (that's 100% difficulty customizable). And an extremely anorexic main story/fetch questing game dynamic.
You typically need to grind for mats etc. in order to upgrade your ships/settlements/gear. So you can continue your infinite exploration loop into discovering all of Hello Game's 18 QUINTILLION RNG planets...
TL DR: There ISN'T a "the point" to this game....
There are two gameplay axes :
-base building
- RNG hunting (items like ships and multi tools, that spawn with pre determined stats and appearance).
"Exploration" as in exploring proc gen maps gets old once you know all the biomes (planets have only 1 biome) and the 20 different POIs that exist in the 256 galaxies.
If only he hadn't made that paramount design decision to turn the game into a load screen simulator. By locking 100% of the exploration aspect behind loading screens. And yes, this was a direct result of the Frankenstein monster NetImmerse/Gamebryo/Creation Engine 1 that Howard INSISTED on recycling and resurrecting since Morrowind/FO3.
If only The Toddrick had taken more time to study successful MMO games like Elite Dangerous and NMS. He would've noticed that space flight (while no direct space to ground mechanic was possible) really consists of THREE main speeds.
1. A warp/frame shift drive/jump drive one BETWEEN solar systems (mandatory)
2. An INTER SOLAR speed WITHIN a solar system (MIA in SF for some reason. Even though it takes SEVEN IRL HOURS TO FLY TO PLUTO FROM THE EARTH IN SOL).
3. An PLANETARY SIDE speed to fly WITHIN a planetary ATMOSPHERE (not possible based on the limits of how each planet surface was rendered by those design tiles)
If The Toddrick had just considered working on making #2 a game mechanic reality, SF would've retained a GOOD MAJORITY of the ED/NMS and even SC fan base who bought into the game hype. BECAUSE WTF IS THE POINT OF HAVING SUCH AN IMMERSIVE, HIGHLY CUSTOMIZABLE, AAA+ SHIP BUILDER MECHANIC. WHEN NONE OF YOUR SHIPS EVER NEED TO LEAVE THE PLANETARY SURFACE. SINCE YOUR PC CAN JUST TELEPORT TO ANY POINT IN THE UNIVERSE--LITERALLY ON FOOT???
That being said--as a 22 year old Bethesda fan boi who played the original TES III: Morrowind and FO3 at release--SF was the deal breaker for me.
I wanted to believe Howard wasn't a repeat Pied Piper. I WANTED to believe after the disappointment of NOT getting TES 6, that he had learned his lesson with that POS cancerous monstrosity that was F76. Not my cuppa Joe, but will give him props for this much aka ironically turning out to be a decent B- MMO & single player game to date. Earning Bethesda (now Microsoft) modest profit margins.
But unfortunately, The Toddrick, with his youthful demeanor & roguish elf like handsomeness (despite being well on the right side of 40 yrs), his amazing non balding mane of flowing locks, and genuinely bovine leather jacket with matching shoes, had devolved to being even more ruthless in his deceptive ways...
Fast forward from F76 PR fallout to the hype that was SF 6 months back. And The Toddrick performed a coup de gras on the loyal fanbase yet again. Giving a good number of us fan bois permanent Stockhausen Syndrome.
So to say the SF logo is a bit somewhat triggering to my eyesight to date would be something of an understatement LMAO. The Shattered Space DLC is definitely going to make or break the uncertain future of this new (and very niche) franchise title.
Yes that's why I pasted: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCLclh1QJKw and watch 1 and 2 thus far. Made all the difference for me but I went too fast and got my starship damaged in the middle of nowhere. 3 Hours trying to get towards base...and was 22 hours out. Gave up! But since adjusted my options for more 'fun' for me.
YOU are right though. I did have options just didn't know it yet how to save myself!
I am saddened you put Momo's post as your answer. The expeditions can be loads of fun, open up aspects of the game you may have never thought of or were recently introduced. They are mostly well thought out and get us lazy old timers out of our comfort zones and freshen up new saves. It's a shame to just take one guys word for it and not test them out for yourself when they cycle around again.
