Can you build structures in this?
Or is it just some equipment your spaceship and tools that you have?

Yes. base building is a thing, and there are a lot of parts to choose from. However, terrain will regenerate and growth through your buildings parts so most players build above around.

Don't build underground or place doorways in places where they must displace terrain. If you are a PVPer and just want to trap players teleporting to your base, then terrain regrowth and "no player base editing allowed" might be a good thing.

You can almost build anything you can imagine in this game using various base objects in creative and unexpected ways. There are electrical and musical parts too that can add animations and sound to your ideas.

Use the terrain to your advantage and use caves and open spaces that you find to build bases underground, or build above caves and then extend your base into the cave space.
It's okay to build anywhere, (even in the deepest oceans), just minimise the impact on terrain you 'dig' to avoid terrain reappearing occasionally. If it does reappear then remove it again quickly with the flattening tool or a weapon.

One of the quests is 'Expand you base', this takes you through the basics for base building, and gives you free blueprints for base building. Later on you will discover a 'place' (no spoilers here :) ) where you can purchase other base items.

However the editor is a bit of a pain to use, it works but sometimes items will not want to go where you wish. Here's an example of what you can do, a lot of folk on the forums enjoy this side of the game.

Hope you enjoy the journey.

If you want to build underground, there are some rare planets with very large "cave" systems, connected by tunnels. These are not like normal caves. Here's an example, skip to around 1:45

Some also have partial water systems and some totally submerged, ideal for navigating with the Nautilon submarine. Some are so wide you can even attempt to fly a ship along them or race friends with Exocars, bursting rocks while following a mapped race track.
Here's an example of a base I recently built in one of my saves.

Also going to flex some of my WIP structures, though this will likely fill with lag and all sorts of flickering issues in the end. To me, however, it will be totally worth as this is the only first person game to my knowledge that´s not limited to one map, where building futuristic cityscape (if you may call it so) can produce such immersive result.
