I really dislike this whole expedition thing. It was fun for the first 3 or 4 expeditions, but after that, it become more of a chore like "oh god, i just got 3 days to do this expedtion!". It would be more fun to make all expeditions available all the time, or just give up that expedition thing and do some more permanent things to the gameplay.
I activly try to avoid expeditions right now, because it is just stress to me, even knowing i am going to miss on rewards. But i would be still curious what happens to this very special expedition after its over. Maybe someone already finished the expedition and know what happens after that?
If you want the ship and rewards, do it, if not skip it, like all expeditions its optional and limited time of TWO MONTHS. You can bring back things you earn to your main save from the expedition now. The ship and custom paints seem worth it to me.
I also really like the solitude. A base where you don't have ships flying over head every few minutes, don't have whole fleets of frigates warping in for the sole purpose of flying over your head. I mean, sure, one could always go to certain systems for that already, but now it's the whole galaxy. It's like they finally listened.
I actually kind of wonder if the empty universe is going to wind up being kind of like Galaxy 256, where you can only get to it if you already have a base in it, or only if someone can take you there. Many things from expeditions are "limited edition" in a like vein. But, who knows.
It's not.
Huh? Only the periodic expeditions are time-limited, and they give "exclusive" rewards for doing them. (I put "exclusive" in quotes because if you really want them, there are other ways to get them.) The rest of the game has some things that have timers, so you have to wait for things to complete, but nothing is time-limited.
If you want a permanently-emptier universe, I believe there are mods that do that.
and what are these other ways to get those "exclusive" things?
There's a mod that I use called Consumerism. You can, for 3000 quicksilver each, buy the rewards that you've missed out on. I think it's a fair exchange, you don't get them for 'free' - so it doesn't feel like cheating.
The downside is that it doesn't function like an expedition reward, which means you have to buy it again on another character.
So people who have not played the expedition can't get them (unless they use a mod or the out-of-game Save Editor.).
It is not clear at this point. This is a new rabbit out of the hat for HG. They may have just found some way to keep any discovered systems to default to the Expo norm if they are discovered by any player during the expeditions. My best bet is some planets discovered will switch back after the Expo concludes. We just don't know for sure.
It is a pretty safe bet that your bases will still be there. The nasty environments and lack of NPC occupied dwellings and activity...not so much.
