Same. Reading about Adrift at first I thought it was a permanent new game mode that sounded great and brought the game back closer to its original vision. A shame.
That, and you have Seven Weeks to complete it. That's just shy of 2 months.
A dedicated player could probably finish it in sub-10 hours. The expedition before this I finished in about 5 hours of played time.
It's not solo, if multi player is on you see other players just the same as any other expedition. That part of the description is misleading.
It is abandoned/empty.
Unless, of course, you turn multiplayer on (I don't understand why you'd wanna do that...).
With MP off, you truly are alone. You'll see comm balls but they are muted, thank God.

It has nothing to do with manipulation or trying to sell copies of the game.
They are just supposed to be fun events you can do for some aesthetic and other rewards, and they will re-run them again during the Holidays.
