Expeditions and what it means for new players
Was thinking about getting into this, but I was curious if there's a ton of content that was only available during expeditions that I've missed the boat on? Or there's other ways to get content that was initially time-locked?

Get in to it, no better time than now that the forum will be hot. Past Expeditions can be revisited. But save this for later.

expeditions can be fun, even after 100%ing the achivements. we always get some kind of fun toy, and the staff and ship from the last one will be useful to a new run anyway.

100% Play the game. There is so much content now it's crazy. I was a late comer to it, about 5 or 6 expeditions back and have enjoyed every minute.

Expeditions reward nothing that is 'needed' so your overall experience will not be degraded somehow if you don't complete one. In fact, based on the Expedition theme many people skip them.

Also, we are often given the chance to complete past Expeditions (many times this occurs towards the end of the calendar year and many times it is a grouping of 4-5 past Expeditions).

And if you are really, really a 'have to have it all' person you can resort to a save game editor which most avoid using, but some do.

Yeah the Expedition mode is time-locked, meaning it runs for specific periods, but it’s great to engage with the community and earn exclusive cosmetics and rewards. If you like that, you will enjoy the Expeditions but yeah you missed a lot on that side. I'm not a fan of these and don't play them anymore.

The base game is a sandbox that gives you hundreds of hours of exploration, building, and discovery tho. The updates still bring new things but more rarely .

Even if the best time, in my opinion, was from the release in 2016 to Atlas Rises in 2018, because back then you had to explore to find techs, etc..., NMS today still gives a special feeling of wonder and calm. Even after 1000 hours, landing on new planets and the relaxing gameplay are worth it. NMS is a well-made gem,for exploring and chilling. Could not find better for planet landing and chilling since its release.

Expeditions are standalone storylines that have you start the game from scratch again, following a different narrative (since last update they can also be started from an active save).
Rewards earned are mostly cosmetic and can later be redeemed on every other save you have. There's no meta item or must-have.
Expeditions are also re-run every now and then, so nothing is lost forever (and as said above you can use a save editor to replay them or grant yourself the missing items if you so decide).

However, Expeditions tend to kickstart the starting phase very rapidly by throwing a lot of new tech at you at once and assuming you know how to use them all, so they may be more confusing for a new player.

I wouldn't recommand beginning NMS with an expedition, I'd say you should play on a normal save first for a little while and then begin the expedition. Good news is, the Expedition last a little less than 2 months so if you can put maybe 10 or 20 hours into a main save first to get yourself started, learn the basics, you'll be good.

Get the game, you won't regret it.

expedition are FOMO unless you install " Consumerism" mod

https://www.nexusmods.com/nomanssky/mods/2062

it allows you to have all the rewards that you can no longer have

All Twitch Drop rewards/from previous expeditions and more can now be found in the Nexus Store (HUB)

everything is obtainable but in exchange for quicksilver ( currency you get by doing Nexus special mission )

so it's not really cheating.

Expeditions are time limited, but they repeat at the end of the year (thus far). Eventually you will get a chance to earn previous rewards. If you don't want to wait there are mods that can unlock them.

The expedition this time lasts for about 7 weeks so a new player could spend some time learning the ropes, following the tutorial at least up to the anomaly and still have plenty expedition time left. But, yeah starting with a totally new toon might take a bit of the fun out of the game. It's better not to have that be your first rodeo though there are those with very large brains that do fine. I know I would have quit in frustration for sure.

The expeditions do cycle around at years end, usually the ones within that same calendar year but that may or may not happen in the future. There is nothing anyone "needs" from them but they are fun and teach us new stuffs, showcase different parts of the game. It's a win if it fits your playstyle, no loss if you never engage.

The expeditions have varied. Some of them were very much for veterans, but others seemed to be a tutorial for the regular game. I haven't fired up Adrift yet so I don't know which this falls under.

Personally I think it's a good idea to run through at least the basics of the regular game before running an expedition.

So the new super interesting content is locked behind limited time always online multiplayer "campaigns"? And if I want to play old ones I have to mod them back in and hope they don't break my game? Wow, my interest in this new update INSTANTLY died. I figured it would be more like a "survival mode" with a harder universe to explore. Guess this game is staying on the shelf for a little longer.

the expedition are not themed at all
the only thing that changes is just the title of the expedition

expedition are only to get the " fomo " comestic reward after doing the exact same thing like in previous expedition like " found X planet learn X thing get 1 000 000 credit "

dont waste your time with it install Consumerism from nexusmod and play in survival mode

This Expedition is exactly the same as all the ones before, there's nothing new here.
In the case where you would not be able to put 10 hours of your life into the game across the span of 7 weeks, the expedition will end and you will miss... absolutely nothing of critical interest.

FYI because with your 15 hours of playtime you seem to have seen it all and done it all, the game has a survival mode with optional permadeath.

God forbid I play a game on another console, lose it in a house fire, then buy it again on PC. I guess steam play hours are the end all be all of the universe. Also read the part where I wanted a harder universe to explore, you know like the one advertised in the most recent dev log. I know "dead" galaxies exist but you have to beat the campaign or get to the galactic core to get to one. I just want to start in a "dead" galaxy from the start without mods or warping to someone's base.

I'm surprised you even made it past the first jump with that attitude, your ship must've struggled to take off with all that ego onboard.
