i probably got lucky, but for statistical purposes, it took me about 27 freighters to get an S rank - never saw an A in that time. i just bounced between two pirate systems that were close together and the...alien type? i wanted for a crew
Worth it? Not really. It can warp a bit further; but that's not useful to me.
I use freighters as convenient storage, for frigate missions early game; and as portable base that duplicates whatever I have in the storage containers at my fixed bases.
I've played 1100 hours since release and never even *seen* an S-class freighter.
Not once. I've seen probably three A-class freighters in 1100 hours.
As far as functionality goes all freighters are identical, it really just comes down to aesthetics for what you like looking at and the rank if you want to warp and/or do frigate missions**
Practically speaking one of the regular non-capital, non-pirate freighters is best because they're much easier to dock at if flying up from a planet (no big fly around). Also on that note, when you summon a pirate freighter you are already "past" the docking point so you have to do a S - shaped approach to dock because its towards the front of the freighter, not the rear. Not a big deal, but gets old after a while.
** It's worth pointing out hyper slots (or w/e theyre called) are ADDITIVE with frigate tech upgrades, so with the right ones you can complete a 28 hr expedition in 2 hours etc. I'm not sure if S rank is required for 3 slots, i havent really looked into them.
You are not the only one. I have played almost double that time and also no S one in sight. But I also do not reload for hours on end. Either it happens or not.
What I found interesting though is that once you save the fleet you get paid for this but then do not get any freighter upgrade after destroying the pirate one.
This I checked out and re-loaded several times:
No freighter Upgrade if you
a) save the fleet and get money
b) if you land after they capitulate, check the freighter out in the hanger and leave again then destroying it.
The only times I got the upgrades is if I destroy the freighter AFTER the fleet is lost.
I do tend to like the S class with all of the upgrades. It all brings in more loot with no damage to your S class frigates. I’m on a new save so I still have to go through all of that again.
Some A-Class Pirate Freighters/Dreadnoughts have better stats and slots than S-Class Pirate Freighters/Dreadnoughts ...
So before entering a potential area to trigger an event within a pirate controlled sytem, do a save and fight that Pirate Dreadnought until you get a neat one with great stats ...
A fight doesnt take any longer than a minute .. very easy ..
My first fights on same savegame triggered more S-Class ones, later C and B only .. so it is pretty RNG

When you look trough the window of a dreadnaught, you feel like you're in a building of a city on a planet.... since how the border of the ship seems to be the horizon.
Ah... and the command room is slightly different too....
Now I realize that I didnt try to walk all over my brand new dreadnaught yet.... to see if the dreadnaught is flat and there's a border to it.....
i did similar on one of my Venators, too... i thought it would be cool to go up into the entrance of the landing bay and go out that way to walk around the rest of the freighter... yeah, that was almost a really really really bad idea as i fell into something and had a really hard time jetpacking back out... i finally found some sort of hidden shelf i could stop on to let the jetpack recharge and then fly up further and back out...
i suspect these ships are made of various blocks that have textures applied to them instead of the ship being one whole 3D model and that's why there are various unseen holes one can fall into and get stuck... idk, though, because i've never tried to extract any of the models in NMS to see what they look like in a 3D modeling program... it would be very cool if they could be fixed so we could go out and walk all over them outside the build area...
If you keep one on you, sometimes you can actually pull it out and use it to step on and get yourself out of a mess.
