Capturing a pirate Dreadnaught
I just captured my own pirate Dreadnaught.
Can you capture it instead of destroying it? Yes you can.

When you stumble into a Pirate fleet fight you have two options.
Destroy the Pirate Dreadnaught before the fleet is destroyed or capture the pirate dreadnaught.

When you decide to capture it two things happen.
First you get the message that the ship surrendered and wishes to negociate terms and the other thing is that the pirate frigates offer themselfs to join you for a fee giving you a whole new type of frigates.

How does it work to capture a Pirate Dreadnaught (for those that do not know how)
It involves a few steps ignoring the fleet to be destroyed when you are not fast enough.
Do them in given order.

1 Destroy the warp engines so it cannot escape
2 Destroy the shield engines. ( the bol type machines that cover the lengt of the ship)
3 Destroy the defensive machine guns and big fleet guns

That criples the ship and make it defensless.
After answering the captain you enter the ship.
2 options. Demand a "reward" or take control of the ship without any costs for you.
The usual options of comparing and such appear when you choose that option.

The ship is basicly in ruins but a simple getting in and out of your ship and then reloading the game will do the trick.

Now you have your own Pirate Dreadnaught.

Have fun fighting to get one.

You really only need to do the first 2

How do you find one? Does this happen during the normal pirate dreadnought encounter now?

You can stumble in a fight with not just Pirate frigates but a Pirate Starship atacking a fleet.
Easaly recognized by the big lights from the guns from the Pirate ship towards the fleet.
Kinda different form your standard "defend the fleet from pirates" kinda thing :)
This is a step higher in fighting.

I did say such a starship is free of charge did I ? :)

Yeah, I'm familiar withe the pirate dreadnought encounter, destroyed many of them:) But I haven't played much since Omega update last week so I was wondering if the option to capture the freighter was just added to this encounter or is it something entirely new.

Here is mine (class B). I captured another one in the Omega Expedition (Class C). So I asked for the reward

I'm not so sure about that. I've been reloading (8 attempts so far) to try and spawn something higher than C-class and just destroying the shields doesn't cause surrender. Destroying the frigate guns however, does cause surrender without even going near the shields. Obviously, you must take out the engines 1st.

Without busting anyones balls. I exchanged my type C standard for the Pirate type A
Guess I got lucky then :)

Ha! Good luck indeed, sir! Enjoy! I'd be very happy to exchange my current A class for a comparable A class dread. I'll just grind away at it. It's only time.

It's pretty much the same battle, but now if you change tactic and take out the warp engines and anti-freighter guns, you get a notification that the Dreadnought has surrendered. You can land and take possession (the same way you claimed a normal freighter) or you can continue to destroy it and claim the usual higher reward - the cargo bulkheads or S class frigate upgrade module. The Pirate combat frigates are available to recruit as soon as the Dreadnought surrenders.
I believe you can land and check out the class/slots and if you don't like it, you can decline, leave the hangar and continue to destroy it (without the escape/civilian destruction time pressure) to claim the usual reward but I haven't had a chance to test that.

I got paid tribute by the captain, then took off and continued to destroy the dreadnought but didn't get the bounty from the civilians, so seems like one or the other. Haven't checked yet to see if you get the bounty when you turn down the captains tribute.

I said you only need to do the first 2 the op listed, I always disable the warp engines first and then the shields, then they surrender. I've done this multiple times but you do it anyway you like, I know what works for me, you can disagree if you want but it does work.

I found engines/big guns the easiest method.

Here's where game logic fails... you have them in a "please don't kill us", total surrender position but yet, you cannot scan the ship to determine if you want it. You must still land, exit and visor scan.

How I wish they'd revise that so you could simply scan it from your ship.

Good to know.

My method is as follows: Boost to the first trench and destroy that line of shield gen's, intercept inbound missiles, run second trench, destroy engines, profit.

managed to nab an "A", haven't seen an "S" yet.
