Lag, Stuttering and Low FPS
Hey all, I know this is not a new thing but my No Mans Sky has suddenly got lag, stutters and low FPS since I reinstalled my windows OS.

I have looked through the internet for solutions, all the way from changing advanced graphic settings, Num High/Low Threads, disabling game overlays, installing in an SSD instead of HDD, disabling multiplayer and reinstalling the game.

I've run across forums and web-pages and nothing seems to work (not even clean installs and erasing all previous data).

My specs are as such:
Windows 10 Pro
Intel Core i5-13600KF
32GB RAM DDR4
Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6Gb
All nvidia drivers up to date
1Tb SSD where NMS is installed

The simptoms are:
- Stuttering every 3-5 secs (more noticeable on space stations).
- 1-2 sec freezes every once in a while
- FPS fluctuations between 10 and 67 fps.

Notes:
CPU never hits 100%
GPU only hit 100% when I had textures in high.

Game setting i use:
All in Enhanced
Except Shadows, post processing and terrain tesselation which are standard
Motion blur disabled
V-Sync triplebuffered

If anyone can offer any insight it would be greatly appreciated. If you have any questions feel free to ask, I may have left some information out of the post that I forgot about.

Thanks!

Assuming FoV hasn't been increased... maybe disable v-sync and keep the frame limit at 60.

Have you tried using FSR 2.0 in place of the usual anti-aliasing options?

Thanks for replying! I've tried with V sync disabled and anti aliasing off. The stutter and fps fluctuations continue. It doesn't make sense as before my performance was great. Idk what changed when I reinstalled windows

It's possible something is missing or requires further configuration. Difficult to say without a great deal of information that is most easily acquired by actually being there.

Could even be the result of a software update. Or it could just be a coincidence; there's no guarantee that anything you personally did was / is a factor.

~~~
All one can do when one simply doesn't know is lower settings until the thing is stable.
That's why I suggested FSR - it's nowhere near as bad as actually reducing the resolution is.
I only got bad issues with FPS and stuttering on the latest expedition (Omega). I loaded a few previous saves from old games and previous expeditions and they all ran fine. I don't have a clue why.
Network traffic? Even if you flip the toggle in the Options menu there are still things the game does which will inevitably take advantage of an open connection, if present.
Discovery data. Player bases. Message beacons. Crossplay stuff.
It's crowded right now. :tipheal:
Same issue. On my home planet it stutters so much. Not just me tho, my friend is having same issues.
NMS suffers from mysterious stutters and FPS drops that many people complain about, even with high-end hardware and nobody so far found why this happens. Topics pop up every couple of weeks. Some theories float about, none 100% verified. Some most common:
1) If you just started the game, it may be compiling shaders in the background. Wait a couple of hours.
2) The game has issues with CPU E-cores, set affinity to force NMS.exe to run on P-cores only.
3) In Advanced Windows Properties set priority to background services. Makes no sense, but some swear it fixed stutters for them. I wonder if this has anything to do with Steam background tasks, try giving them high priority in the Task Manager too.
4) For some switching to borderless helps, for some switching to full screen helps... go figure, so toggle it, see if that helps.
5) Multiplayer causes stutter, especially on busy planets with lots of player's bases. This one is kind of verified by many people. But turning off MP is not an option for some players who want to play with friends.
I probably forgot some. Also, the game gets super buggy for the first few weeks after a major update, so there is that too.
Performance for me has felt a bit sluggish since the omega update. Not stuttering, but not rendering at normal speed. A potentially complicating issue is that I undervolt, slightly underclock (this GPU is factory overclocked) and cap my FPS else my GPU draws > 400W in many games.
I've updated my GPU drivers; but haven't been motivated to really dig into it.
Since you say this started after doing a Windows re-install, I would look at all your hardware drivers. Don't rely on Windows Update for your drivers, particularly motherboard chipset drivers and obviously video card drivers.
I haven’t played in about a year until yesterday. The lag is so bad it’s almost unplayable. It ran like a dream the last time I played? Weird
Some player solved it by installing ProcessLasso and set NMS to "Induce Performance Mode
