Though for controls on foot, definitely not.... I mean it's a FPS/TPS gameplay, nothing beat keyboard and mouse at that (maybe VR ?).
movement usually controller, but using the MT is infinitely better (easier) with a mouse...
i tend to only use the keyboard for quick menu bindings
Every game that launches on consoles is using the design philosophy of console first aka controller first. I noticed with this is Mass Effect 3 (which needed a mod to work controller on laptop. Ironic) and Skyrim, where the UI was really bad with kb/m but super intuitive with controller. NMS is no different and is awesome with the controller.
Of course
One caveat: controller is bad at precision pointing so AOE (Area of Effect) weapons should be first choice. For Skyrim, using magic, the Adept level spells were all AOE so that was the way to go, it helped that they were the best return for magika.
For NMS:
60 years old here, I've been gaming since the 80s, started on a Commodore C64, then an Atari 1040 STE, I always used the used the Mouse and Keyboard, (Except for a short stint on the C64, because I was used to using a joystick on the Atari 2600).
So far WASD (luckily) hasn't caused me any problems yet, but I've also been playing the guitar since 1975, so maybe my left hand is more relaxed or 'conditioned' or something for WASD.
You only have to use CTRL+1 etc to set the keys, after that you only have to hit 1 etc.
I'm willing to bet most people who play 3rd person, prefer using a controller, mainly because 3rd person games are associated with controllers a lot due to how many 3rd person games there are for consoles.
I always play 1st person, because I can't stand having my ship, or horse (RDR2) or my character always in my way, blocking my view.
Although, I think I might try 3rd person view for my ship when taking on a dreadnaught because it's kind of hard to see because you have to get so close to the freighter and it makes it confusing sometimes when you go through the trench and can't see where the other one is.
I just knew someone would come to disprove my assertions.
OMG. I'd forgotten that. This shows how long its been since I've used a kb/m.
You maybe right. I only play first person though: hate see my character model blocking the screen and 1st is more immersive. Though for NMS, starship combat is eaiser/better using 3rd person, specially when you fight that pirate/sentinel dreadnaught.
The game was designed with controller in mind, not kb/m. It is far better.
Then HG somehow screwd the sensitivity and now you can't even walk, the camera is terrible since it's always too much movement or too less and I tried everything to fix it without success.
So since that day, kb/m is the way to play.
Similar age here, started gaming with a Pong console in the 70s and then an Atari 2600. (Still have my 2600 and a working 80s-era 19" TV that it will attach to, and it all still works, though a lot of the game cartridges won't.) And I've played violin since I was a child and still play in a local symphony, so I have a very nimble left hand, even though I'm right-handed. But, the last console I bought was a Super Nintendo, and I used to get a blister on my thumb (just like the Dire Straits song!) from pressing the damn buttons. So I can't with you kids and your fancy controllers. KB/M for me! Works well enough.
I also prefer 3rd person for everything. Yeah, my character gets in the way sometimes, but I like seeing them running around.
