Just stop thinking about it...your on a PC if you want Controller go on Console. But think deeply and remember PC is MASTERRACE!!

Maybe for starship controls.... to me it feels weird to control a ship like i'd drive a car (my simulator reflexes are too used to having the rolls set where they put the turns and it's hardcoded so there'sno way to fix it), but the sticks are probably more accurate and responsive than WASD when it comes to controlling a spaceship....

Though for controls on foot, definitely not.... I mean it's a FPS/TPS gameplay, nothing beat keyboard and mouse at that (maybe VR ?).

If I used a controller, I'd never scan anything or mine anything because my aim is TERRIBLE on a controller, mainly because I'd be using my LEFT THUMB to aim, instead of my RIGHT HAND.

if it helps, i use both
movement usually controller, but using the MT is infinitely better (easier) with a mouse...
i tend to only use the keyboard for quick menu bindings

I like playing games like this on controller, it works fine for the most part but the FPS combat is more difficult than with a mouse (as FPS stuff is for all games controller vs mouse). That said NMS isn't hard by any stretch of the imagination, so the added challenge of using a controller in combat is fun (for me).

For scanning and combat on foot, better mouse and keyboard, for everything else the controller

I've got a gaming laptop but have been using controller since forever. Its way easier on the wrist/thumb/fingers - I play, sometimes, eight hours in a and when you get old(er), I'm 1981 born you'll be glad that you have zero aches and pains. The WASD position is Carpal Tunnel City, eventually.

Every game that launches on consoles is using the design philosophy of console first aka controller first. I noticed with this is Mass Effect 3 (which needed a mod to work controller on laptop. Ironic) and Skyrim, where the UI was really bad with kb/m but super intuitive with controller. NMS is no different and is awesome with the controller.

Of course :steamsunny:, since the kb/m is right in front of me, i still use ctrl+1 for ship shield recharging, crtl+0 to summon minotaur, ctrl+3 for......you get the picture.

One caveat: controller is bad at precision pointing so AOE (Area of Effect) weapons should be first choice. For Skyrim, using magic, the Adept level spells were all AOE so that was the way to go, it helped that they were the best return for magika.

For NMS:
  • Use Neutron Cannon on Multi Tool
  • Minotaur Cannon is OP (on any mode)
  • Positoron Ejector for Ship.

60 years old here, I've been gaming since the 80s, started on a Commodore C64, then an Atari 1040 STE, I always used the used the Mouse and Keyboard, (Except for a short stint on the C64, because I was used to using a joystick on the Atari 2600).
So far WASD (luckily) hasn't caused me any problems yet, but I've also been playing the guitar since 1975, so maybe my left hand is more relaxed or 'conditioned' or something for WASD.

You only have to use CTRL+1 etc to set the keys, after that you only have to hit 1 etc.

I'm willing to bet most people who play 3rd person, prefer using a controller, mainly because 3rd person games are associated with controllers a lot due to how many 3rd person games there are for consoles.
I always play 1st person, because I can't stand having my ship, or horse (RDR2) or my character always in my way, blocking my view.

Although, I think I might try 3rd person view for my ship when taking on a dreadnaught because it's kind of hard to see because you have to get so close to the freighter and it makes it confusing sometimes when you go through the trench and can't see where the other one is.

I just knew someone would come to disprove my assertions. :steamhappy: I'm sure that we are all different and what i meant wasn't so much as a scare tactic, than this (carpal tunnel) is something to be aware off.

OMG. I'd forgotten that. This shows how long its been since I've used a kb/m. :steamdeadpan: I now remember I set the controls and fast switched (in skyrim). I even got a mod that allowed all 8 shortcut to be set using controller combos. Sincere Thanks.

You maybe right. I only play first person though: hate see my character model blocking the screen and 1st is more immersive. Though for NMS, starship combat is eaiser/better using 3rd person, specially when you fight that pirate/sentinel dreadnaught.

The game was designed with controller in mind, not kb/m. It is far better.

ASWD is not going to give you the movement an analog stick will.

Before an update long ago, NMS was perfect with controller.

Then HG somehow screwd the sensitivity and now you can't even walk, the camera is terrible since it's always too much movement or too less and I tried everything to fix it without success.

So since that day, kb/m is the way to play.

I' been gaming on PC XBOX controller for...ever... I also Logitech M501 trackball for NMS construction. (what's a mouse? ) It's my second XBOX controller, wore one out (they are practically indestructible). FWIW its one of the few electronic widgets that is user repairable (found out after I bought another).

I don't know how you guys manage it. Using a controller in front of a desk even for just 15 minutes makes my wrists and arms tired. I can't seems to find a comfortable position to rest my arms on and the fact that the DualSense controller is so damn heavy makes it even worse. For this reason, I use keyboard and mouse even on the PS5.

Similar age here, started gaming with a Pong console in the 70s and then an Atari 2600. (Still have my 2600 and a working 80s-era 19" TV that it will attach to, and it all still works, though a lot of the game cartridges won't.) And I've played violin since I was a child and still play in a local symphony, so I have a very nimble left hand, even though I'm right-handed. But, the last console I bought was a Super Nintendo, and I used to get a blister on my thumb (just like the Dire Straits song!) from pressing the damn buttons. So I can't with you kids and your fancy controllers. KB/M for me! Works well enough.

I also prefer 3rd person for everything. Yeah, my character gets in the way sometimes, but I like seeing them running around. :steamhappy: And when flying the ship you see more of the view, and since I use lots of visual enhancement mods, it makes for some very pretty views.
