New player needs farming advice.
So, I'm fairly new to No Mans Sky and i really like the idea of farming, but I'm not too sure what to farm? I've thought about farming NipNip so i can start making GekNip to sell, but I'm not sure if it's worth it. I just want to know whats the best thing to grow in hydroponics, i don't want to farm something with a laundry list of ingredients. I just want something simple, where i can get on every few hours and sell it almost immediately to make some decent money. What crop would you guys recommend?

The best way to go about farming is to pick a certain plant to focus on that only has 'trade value', and start from there. Don't worry too much at the start about how much units ($) you'll make at the beginning. Just pick a plant, then 'hunt' for the required resources to make it.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
—All of these plants require a Haz-Mat Gauntlet to harvest:
• Albumen Pearl Orb → (60 Indium, and 20 Paraffinium)
• Gravitino Host → (25 Chromatic Metal, 120 Silver, and 25 Magnetised Ferrite)
• NipNip → (1 NipNip Bud, and 20 Faecium)
• Venom Urchin → (100 Emeril, and 50 Gold)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
—Build either a:
• Bio-Dome → (25 Magnetised Ferrite, and 5 Glass)
—or a:
• Square Room → (350 Pure Ferrite)
• Add six Hydroponic Trays → (30 Pure Ferrite, 2 Metal Plating, and 20 Carbon)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hope that helps.

I'm planning on building ~16 biodomes underground to create a huge circuit board factory. Is this a good idea at all? Like, if I work out how many of each plants I need to create the most efficient circuit board factory, then will this work?

Building underground is not good. The terrain fills back in and you won't be able to access your bio domes. You want some type of entry way with stairs going up a couple of levels and then corridors with your biodomes connected.

Medium refiner > combine Chlorine with Oxygen

You get 6 chlorine by using 1 chlorine and 2 oxygen. You make roughly 50 million in 30min
It will crash the market when you sell so you gotta go to another system after.

Hm, alright. I'll just build on the surface then; I only wanted to go underground because I thought it would look nice.

I've done some math, and this bio dome factory should produce around 45,000,000 units every 16 hours (assuming I collected the plants every 16 hours). The only problem is that collecting all of the plant materials for the bio domes is incredibly hard; I have to collect:

200 frost crystals (already collected)
100 dioxite (already collected)
6,300 solanium
3,150 phosphorus (already collected)
2,100 cactus flesh
1,050 pyrite (already collected)
4,200 star bulb
2,100 paraffinium (already collected)

Is there a faster way to collect solanium, cactus flesh, and star bulbs? Is it possible to buy this stuff, or do I have to collect it all by hand?

If you like farming like I do, I usually end up with three grow domes. Start out with selling Circuit Boards and whatever else you can craft while working your way up to Stasis Devices and Fusion Ignitors. Those both go for about 16M a piece.

I usually keep the following crafting containers: Farm Plants, Crafting Supplies, Gases, Crafting Rocks.

The plants should be obvious, the crafting supplies are anything you can make or obtain from minor settlements, or frigates.

Gases should also be obvious but they refine into radon which gives you enriched carbon. You can make some other helpful things with gases, but enriched carbon is the hardest to find on a regular basis.

Crafting Rocks are rocks which craft into the two minerals you need to make the Igniters or Statis devices. You will end up with a ton, so just sell off 10 at a time when you feel glutted.

It is a lot of fun, and encourages me to explore planets to find minor settlements.

This is nearly exactly the same thing I do, down to the container names. Mine are actually called Crops, Gases, Crafting Supplies, and Earth Elements.

If you're into farming and selling products, I suggest setting up a base on each of the planet types to harvest all the elements. Refining those elements with Oxygen will give you all of the plants you require. After you've done that a few times, you'll likely never run out again.

I have a base for each of the elements and gases and a few for Oxygen.

I don't think we can actually craft Geknip, I've seen people mention it numerous times, but I've never figured out how.

Yeah ok so basically, I have no clue what you just said. I'm extremely new to NMS; I only have 40 hours in this game. So I think I'm gonna elect to staying with my method and not hurt my brain thinking about your method.

But how much money does you method typically make per real-life day, do you know? It sounds very interesting.

I would just craft a bunch of the 2x2 plant things in a row in my capital ship and once I have enough to have around 100 plants, I get the crafting recipe for gravitino balls and plant that. It's super easy to craft and it gets you millions every few hours. Naturally, gravitino balls spawn on the floor on planets with very high sentinel activity and as soon as you pick one up, it makes you 3 stars in sentinel notoriety right away. Having them grow in your own "farm" (I just use my capital ship since it has infinite free power for all construction) removes that whole sentinel ordeal and makes it just free money forever.

The prices of gravitino balls are strange. The wiki says they are around 12,000 units in value, but I'm able to sell them for around 40,000 each. Why is it like this?

That is a nice strategy though; but if I were to full up 16 bio domes of gravitino balls, I would still likely make ~10 million units less than if I were to make a circuit board factory of them.

But I think farming gravitino balls is actually a great idea, especially early-game; I actually had no clue that you could just grow them! But since I'm already so far into my circuit board project, I don't think I can turn back. Good advice though.

I mostly started farming them for the expedition objective that wants you to grow and harvest 35 plants and they were the easiest ones to get the materials for. I make way more money duping chlorine in a medium refiner but the gravitino balls are a nice little thing to pick up once in a while when I go back to my freighter for the missions and stuff. Plus you can install a trading thing on the wall to sell them as soon as you pick them up. Price-wise I have no idea, I've literally never payed attention to their value.

Well, at base value, 100 farm plots can give you 800 gravitino balls every 16 hours, which would sell for around 9,952,000 units.

100 farm plots can also give you 19.19 circuit boards every 16 hours, which would sell for around 17,587,705 units.

So the circuit board technique takes a lot more work, but it gives around 1.76 times more money.

Honestly though I would stick with the gravitino balls; its just a thousand times easier to do; getting the blueprint and materials for the gravitino host plant is extremely easy compared to all the stuff for circuit boards.

As it is being discussed here, Farming is used to Craft other items...
As you get out to Factories, and get more Recipes to Craft better Items, you will eventually get to the Two Items that Sell for $15 Million + each...

A couple of weeks back, I sat in one base, and Crafted over $650 Million in those two items, in less than two hours.

Those Recipes will eventually tell you what Crops to Focus on, not the forum discussion.
(Those tow items do contain many of the crops.)

Hm, good to know. I'm very early in the game though, and the circuit boards are pretty much the most advanced blueprint for me. Later on I will try to farm for that purpose.

If you are using biodomes flatten an area with the terrain manipulator first, place the dome, then restore the terrain inside the dome. You can plant 10 times as much and still do "harvest all" as you walk by. You can also do this in a cave, find a nearby HS first or put solar panels underground also (they still work).
