Are Exocraft really slow or am I doing something wrong?
I've tried a little of each exocraft and they feel like they move so slowly! I feel like even on foot I can be faster by melee jumping. Are we supposed to fix this by installing engine upgrades or is there a button to control acceleration? I know there's the boost that last about 1 second.

TBH exocraft feel quite underwhelming right now

If you connect the upgrades correctly for the bonuses they can be quite fast and fun to drive. The tech upgrades increase sustained power and boosts making their effect last longer and more powerful. Each exocraft arguably has specific functions.

  • The Pilgrim bike helps avoid smashing into trees and boulders so avoids attracting the attention of sentinels.
  • The Nomad is great for crossing water and ground terrain.
  • The Colossus is great for storage (all have useful storage) especially for mined or food ingredient collecting.
  • The Nautilon gives protection underwater.
  • The Minotaur give extreme weather protection without the need for hazard tech and you can harvest without stepping out of the suit.
  • Each scanner upgrade expands the choice of scanned objects and range.
  • The minotaur can scan directly for crashed ships which is useful.
  • Use the exocraft scanners to find portals, buildings, blueprints and most useful Drop Pods for free slot expansion in your exosuit and tech. No need for signal boosters and navigation data.
  • Also each exocraft can be controlled either in 1st person or 3rd Person. The minotaur for example can be easier to control in 1st in some situations and all exocar can use 1st person to elevate their weapons and mining tools higher than in 3rd person. This can be useful attacking Walkers at Depots.

  • If you park all the vehicles close to one another you can freely transfer back and forth your stored items. Useful at a base location for selling.
  • Grouped engine tech and boost upgrades will increase sustatained acceleration and jumping dramatically. That helps speeding vertically up mountains or escaping large holes.
  • Drift, Grip and Slide tech give specialised bonuses that alter the handling of vehicles to make it easier to climb or turn. The bonuses can work against each other so check the perentages for grip etc.
  • Tech upgrades can reduce fuel drain for longer uninterrupted driving.
  • Different environments alter the characteristics of the vehiclles, particularly low gravity! And can be a lot of fun leaping large canyons collecting Monstrosity eggs in safety on barren planets.
  • Race track building and competing with friends can be a lot of fun too.

They were nerfed a long time ago.
indeed, i don't even use them

Yeah, you have to upgrade the engine and the boost for most of the exocrafts to be remotely useful. Even with upgrades, I personally prefer melee jumping or using my ship, but I guess there's some fun to be had in race tracks and such.

Minotaur speed seems acceptable as compared to being on foot, if you jump everywhere. Doesn't work so well uphill though. Mainly it seems to be a relief from constantly recharging things as you move (technically the engine does require recharging, but with upgrades, I don't think I've ever had to do it). Their mining lasers are quite powerful, so you can eat through rocks and trees fast. (Minotaur bore cannon eats carbon like crazy though.) Nautilon prevents you from having to constantly recharge air and life support, at the expense of... less frequent charging of its engine. Those are the only two I've ever made much use of.

Meanwhile as Im zipping round getting tons of Salvage Data on the motorcycle...

Its a portable, easily buildable thermal shelter for when firestorms hit the world like Gods fury, whats not to love? Tricking the Pilgrim out is one of the best decisions I ever made. ^^

Right? These things are NOT environmentally friendly.

I'll try the Pilgrim then, and see if I can find some good upgrades on stations

Did somebody say hovercraft?

Im down for a Hovercraft. Ooooooh that looks so cool! I got to get me one of those!

Exocraft are really just there to farm storm crystals on extreme storm planets, for the most part.

They all can have their uses if you upgrade the heck out of them, but yeah melee flight and even jump jets are all you'll probably need on a non-deadly world.

That said, melee flight was nerfed a while back. It still technically works, but it's not the light speed end all be all travel mode it used to be.

i forget what the game calls a hovercraft. i rename them to 'hovercraft' and 'bike' respectively

I want to say the hovercraft is called the "Nomad" but not sure. For awhile I never touched the Exocraft outside of that technician mission that requires you to drive them to abandoned stations for units. It was fun the first two times, then got old. But I did take the pilgrim out in the new mode and now I'm reconsidering my thoughts on Exocraft though upgrades are a must. Honestly if HG would just give them a decent tune-up so they drive faster then a pregnant turtle Exocraft might actually get used more often.

Except the colossus, that thing is just plain useless.

I can only suggest Pilgrim with three S-class exocraft engine modules. Each module gives between 10% and 15% top speed increase so you'll get about 35-40 on average (that's about 30u/s on flat terrain without booster). Not that bad, good enough to break monotony from time to time.

Also, you can create your own races if you're into that (time-based challenges, you can create your own track, place checkpoints and even build boosters).

now that's true... except colossus makes a wonderful eleventh storage container... double size :)
Also, it's fun to plow through endless fields of trees while singing Biggering from the Lorax.

The upgrades that increase drift, turning and so on... should I use them? Which ones?
