It is really easy to bury a room where you did not intend to put it (thanks for those virtual placement guides HG-NOT). On a freighter that can be double trouble because one small mistake and you are falling through space.

To force a part you want and override the auto selection of a part, the building menu icons of some parts can be expanded to reveal the individual parts. Expanding the selection permits choosing the part you prefer to be snapped into place. If a part has more that one of its type to choose from, it is indicated by a small symbol in the corner of the part icon, which can be clicked on to display the additional parts.
The corridor parts also I think connect upwards automatically to ladder parts. The idea of the auto system is matching parts connect to each other or linked parts but in some circumstances that is not always desired. Hence being able to override the auto select is a useful function if needed. This can be useful if after placing parts, perhaps a corner of a hidden part is seen poking through the wall of another and so being able to hide it visually forcing selection of a different part can be helpful visually,

Also there was a bug that prevented colouring of forced parts, or sometimes it occurred when selecting them later and duplicating previously placed forced parts. While building, it is quicker to select and duplicate from parts already placed, instead of opening the build menu constantly. If the bug occurs and a part will not duplicate it may deleting and replacing again. The advantage of duplicating parts in situ is that you can duplicate a part and any colouring it has. So if you want to place a lot of repeating parts colour one part first and duplicate from that, otherwise after placing parts they would then individually have to be coloured all over again. If you know you want to colour a large section of a base then it can be efficient to colour a part first then duplicate with it already coloured.

When building large areas it can be useful to step outside of the base interior on the freighter build area and build from the outside with a much clearer view of the entire structure. Base parts are distinguished from each other by part markings and can be selected and duplicated a little easier when identifying parts to move or copy.
