Just to be clear: electric wires can be placed at any angle and [almost] any length and can be segmented around any structure EXCEPT for your starship - if your starship is near it won't let you place stuff anywhere close to it. The wiring segments have glowing green icons where they attach to one another.
So it does work, if your having issues then save, exit the game, verify your game files, reload and try again.

This will do exactly what it says and hide all the wires in your base when your not in build mode.
I have no mods.
I am trying to place them in a Ground base/planet colony.
Is there a key I need to hold to attach a wire to a wire, or maybe something I need to do in build mode?
nvm... you got it fixed
