I know you get reduced value as far as units worth of scraps from damaged ships but does it effect the chance of getting an Augment?
Here is one way
I switched to making money with crafted items and buying the inventory slots.
I found a wealthy system where A-class shuttles arrive as fast as I can scrap them, and all of them are around 1-5 million units each. With 60% of total investment regained by selling the scrap, I managed to almost max out my hauler in about 20 minutes spending just 40 million units.
You can sell the upgrades you get too (you have to sell them to the upgrade merchants if you were wondering), which gives you a stupid amount of nanites. An A-class ship gives you 900 nanites worth of A-class upgrades.
Augments drop from scrapping based on ship class. C-class rarely drop, B-class infrequently drop, A-class seem to almost always drop. I don't know if the ship's state of repair has an affect, but you are buying fully functional ships anyway, so it doesn't matter.
Only found 1 S class shuttle and 3 exotic ships 2 I'm keeping and 1 I'm giving to a friend if I can.
Going to experiment with swapping my exotic with a crashed ship while my friend and I are both there and see if he can then claim the abandoned exotic unless someone else has tried this and knows if it works or not?
I have checked the thread linked it was helpful but some things were unclear but the mention in this thread by derpy cat 5 might have cleared some of that up.
I'm about to put it to the test now.
Thank each and everyone of you
(it's cheaper to boost storage in a small ship hoping for a storage augmentation than it is to buy storage slots in a big ship: 15 million-50 million vs 300 million per slot)
I found it on reddit (user Moongrease) and have posted the portal on a couple threads here
It makes grinding a little quicker, of course there is glitching and the save editor depending on you personal choice in how to play.
It has been a while (before the NEXT update) that this might have been possible because I remember trading a ship with an npc on the space station and my old ship turned into an abandoned ship and I was able to just claim it for free but seems this doesn't work anymore
