Check out what kind of fauna you have around the area. If you scan, it will tell you what kind of bait they prefer.
Create that bait and load it the feeder. It is powered by your generator- solar or EM.
Possible spoiler: Expect to be disappointed. The whole taming/food creation feature appears to be only partially complete at this point. There is no actual point to doing any of it, except the joy of feeding critters automatically and harvesting stuff to make recipes that have minimal value.
Figure out where the critters spawn...hopefully near your base. Build the stuff there and it is an ok experience. On one of my saves, I had to go get the critters and ride them over to the automatic feeder from the spawn point. You will have to do that every time since they will wander away whenever you leave the area.
Thanks for that 👍🏼
While they are eating build your portable kitchen or collect plants. The creatures drop faecium and provide other useful ingredients if needed. You can use the kitchen slots to store stuff like bait you prepared earlier. You can also dedicate maybe the colossus exocar to store bait or specialist plants (starbulb, frost crystals, cactus etc). The specialist farming plants can also be used for making the automated feed you might need, without having to search for specific plants on a planet.
Being prepared with the basic plants and stuff means you never go short when you need them and always have ready ingredients without having to groan and go search for things. So always pick plants whenever you stumble across them playing the game, ready for use later.
It helps to have as many slots in your exosuit as possible.
You're probably right about the food crafting being in its infancy. Probably there will be even more benefits at some point. Maybe keeping creatures alive or docile as we transport them by freighter in their cages to other worlds or to our home bases! Not having the right food sources could mean escaping chaos on our adventures in space....
Although I haven't made many of them (or discovered them yet!) but some recipes can make some very lucrative expensive foods which can be sold. That is one aspect of the game which can provide income and compliments other means of gaining units. There is info online about which recipes and ingredients can make enormous amounts of units.
Also the food (or most of it) can be eaten to provide life support when you need it. This can be a life saver in the more challenging modes and is quite fun in fact, adding to the immersion of surviving on an unknown world.
The Anomaly NPC chef will also give small to large amounts of nanites for quantities of certain cooked foods. Just another source for nanites but not the only way to accrue them.
