How do planetary charts work?

I use a distress chart, it says "nothing found". I go to a transmission tower in the same system and find a distress beacon. Are these broken?

No, it seems to be set up that you can get a set of whatever the chart is for, or nothing. So, if you are looking for something specific, i would recommend using navigational data to buy multiple charts, and just keep opening them until you get what you want.

Was the transmission tower on the same planet that you tried the planetary chart on?
Or were they on different planets?

The planetary charts really do not work that great. I gave up on them pretty quickly and just look for stuff by either flying low and slow, or take missions from the station that will get me to the right buildings. The old system worked a lot better and did not require you to buy maps.

"Find the Gek" missions always lead you to a Trading Station and Small Settlement as example.

I think they are ok for new players who have not developed their navigational sense yet. It took me about 400 hours before I was really comfortable cruising planets and had a pretty good sense of where building sites were likely to spawn.

I tend to use them in order to find crashed ships to salvage. If you have a better way to do so, please, i need a better way because it gets difficult to find salvaged data.
