If you want salvaged freighter modules, piracy in a pirate system is a relatively quick way though crashed and sunken ones can also work depending on the system. Some systems will have more of them than others in general. Use you exocraft and nautilon radars to locate them easily.
You can hover over any given container pod to see if it has what you want and there's usually a pirate mission at the local station that'll reward you with a forged passport to reset your reputation with whichever faction you stole from.
I've had exceedingly low returns with the other methods people have mentioned.
Missions that reward salvaged frigate modules are rare. And, regardless of the derelict freighter type (crashed, or spaced) the modules seem even more rare than the missions.
I don't know why these these components are so hard to get compared to pretty much anything else in the game. It makes no sense to me either.
Just play the game and stop focusing on Frigate modules.
PS There were two Expeditions that rewarded 11 and 15 (total 26) Salvaged Frigate modules and given how easy it is to run old expeditions thru the new Nexus terminal. You don't even have to complete the expedition, just the milestone(s) that reward the modules.
Note: To exit the expedition early, just switch back to ONLINE mode and the game will update and know that the expedition you were just on has completed.
#8 Polestar - 11 modules
#11 Voyagers - 15 modules
In my mega save project file I've completed half the expeditions and my freighter has 16 modules in its cargo hold

If you are talking about upgrade modules and cargo upgrades for your freighter, imo the Dreadnaught encounters are by far the easiest way to farm them. Note that you can find pirate systems that have such an encounter each time you warp to them, with no timer or warp count restrictions. If you happen to find two such systems within warp range from each other, you can fully upgrade your freighter very rapidly.
Re: Frigate expeditions - you get a steady inflow of SFM over time with industrial (and some balanced) expeditions. For myself, that was a reason to prioretize industrial frigates initially, but it does not matter all that much.
Re: Crashed frighters - many players only check the first two containers and miss the burried ones. Drop rates for SFM are not great, but every roll helps a little.
Think in terms of a few weeks of playing, rather than trying to obtain them in a few minutes or hours. At this point, I have a surplus of SFMs in most of my saves. I’m also prepping for the next expedition, and I plan to include 30 SFMs in that supply package so that I can nicely equip any freighter that I get during the expedition.
I can't get the refiner dup trick to work, using the small portable refiner. Big one on my freighter will not dupe either.
