Does Cross Platform need PS Plus now?

In the past few weeks, husband and I have been playing cross-platform without subscribing to Playstation Plus. (I'm on a PC, he's on a PS5). Today, after the patch, we can no longer join to play co-op.

Cross-platform play, multiplayer, and friends-only invitation are enabled on his end. When he tries to host a mp session, the only thing he sees is the option to subscribe to PS Plus. This was not previously the case. If I try to host a game, he doesn't see my game either.

We are on each other's friends list, but my named disappeared on his end. When he attempted to re-add me, the ps5 said it failed to add.

I tried searching online for an answers, but keep finding conflicting info about whether PS Plus is required. Or, if it is, then how were we able to play a few days ago?

I have a friend that I play with and he's on PS4. He and I were both able to play together last night. I'll ask to be certain, but I don't believe he has PSPlus. Is it possible that the newest patch wasn't downloaded yet to your husband's PS?

Yes, exactly, Goldie's right, it looks most likely like version mismatch - both of you have to have the same version of the game. Sometimes, releases for different platforms may be few days apart. So make sure that both you downloaded the latest updates.

More accurately, you both have to be on the CURRENT version.

I've been playing for years with someone on playstation and yeah, they often get out of sync since Sony has a bunch of red tape and extra fees they charge devs. This rarely lasts more than a few days tho.

For multi player you need to be playing with the same build number. On PC you can see that in small print in the lower right corner of the first menu.

Playstation requires the current version to play online. PC isn't as restrictive.

Can Sony have changed policies on the fly? I gifted my nephew a PS4 NMS and his d/l won't start as it states "Playstation Plus required". This was 2 days ago.

I've yet to get any response from support - they are hard to chase down!

One other thing, if you are on the experimental branch, that could cause version mis match.

Thanks all. We'll check our version numbers to make sure they match. I'm not sure if it will work though, because when he tried to host a MP session, he got the PS Plus notice.

We are playing on the public (recent) version.

It would be helpful if the dev posted definitive information about this, it's really hard to find.

I saw a few articles on Reddit that said that PS players DO NEED PS Plus in order to play with other players. When my friend comes home from work I'll ask if he has it when we play together.

I know that you said that in the past two weeks you were both able to play together without PS Plus, but is that somehow possible because these past two weeks the game was free for everyone to play?
